Binghamton University, one of four research universities in the State University of New York System, invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Dean, Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The University is seeking a creative, innovative, collaborative, and experienced leader with a record of scholarly accomplishment and administrative experience who can work with a dynamic President and Provost and world-class faculty members toward a shared vision of becoming the premier public institution in the nation.

A vibrant public research university with a Carnegie classification of R1, which is consistently ranked among the top 40 public universities (currently at 31) in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Binghamton continues to improve the quality of both undergraduate and graduate education by seeking to vigorously support the scholarly, creative, and research endeavors of its faculty.

The Watson School is an innovative and high-tech center of Binghamton University focusing on a hands-on and real-world approach to education where students embrace new challenges and create the future. The School offers doctoral, masters, and bachelors degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Systems Science and Industrial Engineering to over 2,000 undergraduate and 1,200 graduate students. It has a faculty size of 125 (95 full-time and 30 part-time) and over 50 staff members.  The Watson School offers state-of-the-art resources including more than $7 million in new equipment and computer facilities. Watson School faculty also have access to over $30 million core facilities and instrumentation at the University’s New York State Center of Excellence, along with the Center for Flexible Hybrid Medical Device Manufacturing that has been designated as a Center for Advanced Technology. All undergraduate programs in the Watson school are ABET accredited.  The Watson school has increased its research expenditures by 86% over the past ten years and is now responsible for 50% of sponsored research at Binghamton University.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean of the Watson School serves as the School’s chief administrative and academic officer, and leads the School in accordance with the University’s mission and goals. Among the Dean’s general responsibilities are to consult with faculty to develop strategic initiatives and curricula; provide leadership for assessing existing programs and developing new ones; administer the school’s budget; recruit and retain faculty and staff; take a leading role in personnel matters, including tenure, promotion, and renewal; help the School realize its commitment to diversity; further enhance the School’s profile in research, sponsored programs, and graduate education; promote interdisciplinary research and teaching; represent the School to external constituencies; and lead the School’s development activities. Additionally, the Dean will be asked to clearly articulate a shared vision for the future of engineering and applied sciences to ensure a leading-edge education at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful applicants must have a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and academic leadership that warrants appointment as a tenured full professor as well as an administrative record that demonstrates the following: innovative and effective leadership in higher education; a collegial administrative style that promotes a sense of academic respect and collaboration with faculty, staff, and students; an ability to foster strong connections between internal and external constituencies, including industrial and international partners; experience working within a diverse community of students, staff, and faculty in a complex university setting; success in building and enhancing sponsored research programs; and a record that evidences a strong commitment to diversity and success in enhancing it through the recruitment and retention of underrepresented faculty, staff, and students. Candidates should have significant experience in reconciling differing opinions and developing solutions within a shared governance model. The successful applicant will articulate an ambitious vision for the School and will have demonstrated experience with strategic planning, extramural funding, assessment, accreditation, graduate education, and interdisciplinary approaches to research and education, as well as a commitment to private fundraising. Candidates should respect a variety of approaches to scholarship and demonstrate ability and commitment to strengthen an environment that fosters and supports interdisciplinary research, scholarship, teaching, and service. In this role the candidate must be visible to Watson and University constituents, and present as an ambassador of Watson outside of the University.
