We have an opening for a Forensic Science Center (FSC) Deputy Director. You will work closely with the FSC management team on the management and oversight of all aspects of the mission space including strategic planning, relationships with key federal program stakeholders, staffing, project management and execution - including LLNL funded institutional investments, development of Science, Technology and Engineering (ST&E) base in partnership with discipline organizations, and financial oversight.This position requires you to fund the majority of your time through programmatic and other direct funding sources and will be in the FSC. This position is in the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division supporting the Forensic Sciences & Assessments Group.

This position will be filled at either the SEL.4 or SEL.5 level, depending on your qualifications. Additional job duties will be assigned at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Guide and provide strategic and technical direction for the FSC and participate in strategy development and execution for the Laboratory, in collaboration with the Center Director.
- Develop innovative concepts and promote new ideas. Recommend and implement changes to methods and make final decisions on administrative, technical, and/or operational matters.
- Establish the direction and execution of programmatic work (direct funded, LDRD, and strategic investments) and manage the scope and schedule of an annual budget of ~$30M in partnership with Global Security (GS) senior management team.
- Ensure all project and program operations and performance standards are realistically set and attained, leading to the effective achievement of objectives and are executed in compliance with Laboratory, and Department of Energy (DOE) requirements.
- Interact regularly and manage relationships with senior management, project sponsors and customers to ensure that customer needs are understood, project activities are tracked sufficiently, and results are high quality and delivered on a timely basis.
- Establish and monitor current and future FSC staffing requirements, and work with FSC management to ensure successful onboarding of new staff.
- Develop strong projects and help advocate stronger ties to laboratory programs for which analytical science is or can be a key element.
- Responsible for the general oversight and personal commitment to the goals of integrated Safety Management, Integrated Safeguards and Security Management, compliance with all ES&H and QC regulations, good business practices, diversity and equal opportunity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Duties at the SEL.5 Level
- Mentor and coach scientific and technical staff across the FSC to assist in their professional growth and career development.
- Negotiate with senior management and/or internal/external customers/sponsors regarding matters of significance to the FSC and its relevancy and vision while working effectively and collaboratively as a member of the GS management team; acting as the Center Director in her absence at both internal and external forums.

Qualifications
- PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or a closely related field or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
- Expert knowledge and subject matter expertise in analytical chemistry and/or biology methodologies and their applications.
- Significant experience developing and managing multi-year projects involving interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers and supporting staff, including in-depth knowledge of budget, programming and budgeting for sponsors within the intelligence, defense and law enforcement communities.
- Expertise in developing, sustaining and growing R&D and programmatic projects.
- Extensive experience working with technical elements of the intelligence, defense and law enforcement communities.
- Extensive experience in personnel management, including recruiting, hiring, mentoring, career development, corrective action, ranking.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, advocate, and advise senior management or sponsors both internal and external to the Laboratory.
- Ability to travel extensively to programmatic meetings.
Additional Qualifications at the SEL.5 Level
- Extensive experience leading large and multidisciplinary teams and managing multi-year projects.
- Expert knowledge in developing, sustaining and growing R&D and programmatic projects.
- In-depth knowledge of one or more key FSC customers, including other government agencies.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience and subject matter expertise in the analysis of real-world forensic samples.
- Demonstrated experience working with and maintaining a reputation of excellence within the intelligence community.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
