We have an opening for a Deputy Program Director (DPD) to work with the WPD Program Director (PD) in all aspects of Program leadership and management in the Weapon and Physics Design (WPD) Program. You will be responsible for advancing the WPD mission to anticipate and meet the demands of the current and future stockpile, and broader national-security concerns, through the application of innovative design skills and the development and application of validated, science-based, stockpile-stewardship capabilities. You will work closely with the WPD Program Director to accomplish WPD and WCI programmatic deliverables. You will interact with all levels of management both within LLNL and external to the Laboratory including DOE/NNSA, DoD, academic institutions, and management at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Sandia National Laboratory (SNL). This position is in the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Directorate reporting to the WPD Program Director.
Essential Duties
- Establish a framework for the strategic planning, development, and achievement of WPD and WCI programs and deliverables, working closely with the PD and the WPD Program senior management team.
- Provide technical direction for the development and implementation of the annual WPD Program Plan in collaboration with the PD and APDs.
- Lead and integrate WPD programmatic efforts in support of the enduring U.S. nuclear stockpile.
- Manage and communicate program objectives, accomplishments, and plans to WPD workforce.
- Represent the WPD Program to WCI management at internal and external meetings, working groups, and on special assignments, including preparing and giving presentations. Represent the PD in his absence across a broad range of issues in a variety of environments.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal/external customers and sponsors.
- Promote and maintain strong relationships and communication with NNSA, DoD elements associated with nuclear weapons and other NNSA laboratories.
- Develop and promote partnerships and collaborations across LLNL with disciplines and other programs to ensure programmatic deliverables are met.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- PhD in physics or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience and expertise in the physics design and development of nuclear weapons and knowledge of WCI and the LLNL weapons program.
- Extensive leadership skills in a high-technology research and development environment and experience providing leadership in large-scale projects, supporting large-scale projects led by others, and the ability to safely and securely deliver results.
- Expertise in strategic planning and organizational dynamics and extensive experience in decision-making based on aggregate information and the recommendations of others that significantly affect the ability of the organization and Laboratory to achieve its overall objectives and long-range goals.
- Extensive experience sustaining productive relationships with other divisions, directorates, laboratories, UC, NNSA management, other institutions across the DOE and DoD enterprise, and external advisors and reviewers.
- Comprehensive knowledge of national-security policy issues and with Laboratory and external contacts working these issues.
- Expert communication skills, both written and verbal, necessary to effectively explain, present, negotiate, advise, and influence all levels of management and government officials.
- Advanced problem solving, analytical, technical, organizational, and management skills necessary to independently advise, recommend, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions.
Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with national-security policy issues and with Laboratory and external contacts working these
issues.- Familiarity with LLNS and Department of Energy policies and procedures.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
