We have multiple openings for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to conduct basic and applied research in the optimization, simulation, and design of physical and engineered systems. You will work collaboratively and independently to extend and develop physics-based design optimization tools. The team is working to both extend the state-of-the-art and support Laboratory missions. These positions are in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate. Essential Duties
- Conduct research in and develop algorithms for the optimal design of engineering systems governed by nonlinear, transient, multiscale, and multi-physics phenomena that include uncertainties in geometry and material properties.
- Design, implement, and analyze the aforementioned algorithms in HPC environments.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team to identify and solve challenging design optimization problems within the most open design spaces while enforcing applicable manufacturing constraints.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Contribute to group grant proposals, including proposal presentations and preparation of proposals that will provide future research opportunities and new directions in design optimization.
- Maintain current knowledge of research developments and challenges in design optimization.
- Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
- PhD in Engineering, Mathematics, Computational Science, or related field.
- Experience with programming skills in one or more higher-level programming languages such as C/C++/FORTRAN and scripting languages including Python/Matlab.
- Knowledge of massively-parallel computing and one or more associated parallel programming interfaces, such as MPI, OpenMP, or CUDA.
- Knowledge of shape/topology optimization techniques and algorithms.
- Experience writing finite element codes for HPC.
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
