The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) seeks a visionary and innovative leader to direct the Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research (NCESR.) The mission of NCESR is to conduct energy research that produces new technologies, processes, and systems that provide new or significantly enhanced energy sources and improve the quality of life and economic opportunity for all Nebraskans. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, the Director will provide creative leadership for the Center and will facilitate all research, operations, and resource development activities for this research enterprise. The successful candidate will:

  • Strategically shape the growth of NCESR.
  • Contribute to development and expansion of the vision.
  • Lead the development of energy research and strategic planning for related programs.
  • Be a facilitator for UNL in all dimensions of energy sciences.
  • Work collaboratively with NPPD, other universities, academic departments and colleges and other partners to advance energy-related programs across multiple disciplines.
  • Leverage and multiply the NPPD funding by building large-scale interdisciplinary teams to pursue extramural funding for energy education, research and/or demonstration projects.
  • Develop additional sources of funding from public and private sources.
  • Provide administrative and budgetary oversight for the NCESR.

While experience within higher education is preferred, the successful candidate may come from the following backgrounds:

  • A faculty administrative background;
  • Analogous senior roles in governmental agencies or federal labs;
  • Persons with a number of years of experience overseeing a broad range of energy related responsibilities in the industry or not-for-profit sector.


The successful candidate will possess the following characteristics:

  • Possess credentials and a distinguished scholarly record that qualifies him or her for a tenured faculty position in an energy-related department.
  • Possess a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a related field.
  • The ability to think broadly and develop research and programmatic activities across many energy-related disciplines.
  • The understanding of how to build productive relationships with faculty, students, administrative leaders, and external partners across various disciplines and organizational units.
  • Ability to understand and work effectively with diverse faculty viewpoints.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills that demonstrate resourcefulness, a high level of energy, self-assurance, and a “can-do” attitude.
  • Passion for promoting the Center and developing strong partnerships with industry, other universities, government agencies and other partners.
  • Demonstrated experience in energy sciences research and proven experience in leadership, strategic planning and development.
  • Fair and firm administrative skills with a reputation for transparency, integrity, and high ethical standards of excellence.
  • Though not required, among the desirable qualifications for the Director of the Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research is an earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree.
  • Candidates with experience in electrification and electricity carbon management (reduction, capture, sequestration and utilization including the use of agricultural pathways) will be prioritized.


UNL offers an attractive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with the successful candidate’s background and experience. This position is a full-time 12-month administrative appointment.
