The College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) seeks to fill the position of Director of the Applied Research Institute (ARI). The ARI Director will be selected by, and report to, the Dean of the UIUC College of Engineering.

The ARI is a research, development and engineering (RD&E) organization on the Urbana-Champaign campus. The ARI professional research staff executes applied research and development projects for a range of customers, including government agencies and corporations, with expertise in materials development; monitoring, diagnostics and control; and algorithm and software development. The next ARI Director will build and steward strategic long-term partnerships, leading to a significant crosscutting research and development portfolio in application spaces such as defense, manufacturing, building science, environmental sensing, health, and agriculture. The Director will be a part of the Dean's leadership team, and will be responsible for proactively increasing the visibility and broadening of applied research collaborations with federal, state, industrial and international agencies. We seek nationally-visible candidates who exhibit exceptional leadership skills with an established track record of collaboration and partnership. The successful candidate will possess strong communication, management, and negotiating skills, with demonstrated accomplishments in: establishing and sustaining a vibrant research organization; leveraging a deep network of government mission-driven agency contacts to cultivate and capture new funding opportunities; and partnering with other research organizations, particularly within the academic R&D community. All candidates must possess the minimum of a baccalaureate degree in a relevant field and must be eligible for a national security clearance. Ideal candidates will hold an earned doctoral degree or the highest degree awarded in her/his discipline. If the individual selected to serve as Director is additionally qualified to hold faculty status, an affiliation with an academic department may be considered.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Guide the development of the strategic plan for the second phase of the development of ARI and provide leadership in execution of these plans.
  • Develop and direct research, development and engineering priorities for ARI, and advocate for these priorities internally and with national funding agencies, corporations, and potential partner institutions.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship of ARI research staff in identifying new research opportunities.
  • Establish and develop research and development collaborations and partnerships with faculty, industry, and government stakeholders.
  • Establish mechanisms for effective team building, including developing coalitions with other research institutes.
  • Build ARI teams to respond to specific calls for proposals and execute resulting programs.
  • Understand the needs and develop approaches to continually grow and develop Institute scientists, engineers and technologists, including professional development, opportunities for bridge funding, and increased exposure to new sources for learning.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary to further the ARI mission and success.
