We have an opening for a Division Leader to lead the Materials Engineering Division (MED). MED is a research, development, and production organization of 450 staff members dedicated to mission-focused research and technical support of Laboratory programs. You will lead and manage the execution of programs and projects that include institutionally funded and externally sponsored cutting-edge research, as well as the translation of leading-edge capabilities to support the National Security missions of LLNL. You will be responsible for the successful demonstration and application of a broad range of production and experimental capabilities, including manufacturing engineering, materials testing and characterization, nondestructive evaluation, micro/nanofabrication of electronic, mechanical, and optical devices and advanced materials fabrication and processing. You will develop and maintain enduring partnerships with the Laboratory's programs and other organizations that support these programs, to ensure that MED remains relevant to the Laboratorys mission. In addition to technical leadership and management, you will develop a diverse and inclusive workforce, recruit and retain critical skills, implement cost-effective recharge structures and, plan and execute institutional facility and equipment acquisition projects. This position will report to the Associate Director for Engineering and will be a part of the Engineering Directorates core management team.

Essential Duties
- Provide leadership, vision and direction to Division personnel; establish and articulate a strategy for maintaining core capabilities and identifying future directions for the Division that ensure effective integration with and responsiveness to Engineering and Laboratory program needs.
- Champion and develop Division staff to research innovative, relevant technologies; establish standards for scientific and engineering excellence for research and development activities; increase the national recognition of Engineering's research and development accomplishments; encourage active participation in professional organizations and national or international committees.
- Manage and develop a strong relationship with the internal and external customer base and encourage utilization of sound project management principles in the execution of projects.
- Establish direction and provide oversight of Laboratory Directed Research & Development (LDRD) projects and technology development activities in the Division, and contribute to the development of the Directorate's overall R&D portfolio.
- Maintain the Laboratorys core capabilities in Manufacturing and Materials Engineering through responsible fiscal management of the MED Service Center; ensure that Service Center operational costsare equitably distributed across a Laboratory-wide customer base.
- Direct institutional resources toward strategic investments in infrastructure that benefit all programs, integrating short and long-term programmatic needs; strategically guide Laboratory facility and equipment investments to enhance productivity, safety and security in 195,000 sf of laboratories, clean room and manufacturing facilities.
- Lead the recruiting, hiring and career development of a diverse set of engineering talent, outstanding innovators, and world-class researchers; provide direction and oversight for personnel administration activities including performance reviews, performance management, appraisals, ranking, and salary management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other branch of engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant knowledge and experience.
- Extensive experience managing and leading a technical organization, including knowledge of strategic planning, organizational dynamics, workforce planning processes, budget, and project management.
- Significant experience in personnel management, encompassing supervision, performance management, and career development.
- Significant intellectual leadership and extensive working knowledge and skills in one or more of the core capabilities that comprise the Division.
- Exceptional innovation skills, including ability to integrate ideas, technologies, and concepts to create compelling new solutions to meet LLNL mission needs.
- Expert problem-solving, analytical, technical, organizational, operational and management skills necessary to define issues and challenges, and independently advise, recommend, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions.
- Extensive experience attracting and hiring extraordinary individuals to support novel technology development, transition of technologies to programs, and serve in program leadership roles.
- Strong commitment to nurturing a diverse and inclusive workforce and leading cultural change.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with extensive experience effectively interacting with government, laboratory, university, and industry personnel and influencing the development of long-term goals and objectives.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other branch of engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant knowledge and experience. Track record of achieving and publishing results in research and development.
- Experience working with DOE or other relevant government agencies, comprehensive understanding of Laboratory policies and procedures, working knowledge of Laboratory financial policies and practices, and experience with Service Center fiscal models.
- Broad knowledge of and experience with the major Laboratory programs and the LDRD process.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
