Areté conducts research, development and operational capability development across the technology spectrum for a wide range of national security and commercial customers.  Areté applies hard science to hard problems to develop innovative solutions.  We execute cutting edge analysis in sensors, lasers, and modeling.  We also conduct field tests of our products and manufacture a variety of components.  An employee-owned company, Areté offers an exciting and challenging work environment with highly competitive compensation levels, a full benefits package and significant advancement opportunities. Our Arlington, VA office has an immediate opening for an Electrical/Electronics Engineer.  This is an exempt non-supervisory full-time position.

The successful candidate will design new sensors using analog and digital circuits starting from requirements and physical principles, build, debug and test them, integrate into a larger system and conduct successful field tests; developing sensor systems for harsh (primarily subsurface ocean) environments where most of our sensors work at low frequencies (<1kHz) and require low-power and low-noise design techniques.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design analog and digital circuits for new sensing methodologies using low-power and low-noise design techniques

  • Develop control firmware to run on an appropriate microcontroller (such as the TI MSP430) or FPGA, as well as software to read and process data on a desktop.

  • Work independently or in a multi-disciplinary team, develop potential concepts to solve a problem, beginning by analyzing system requirements to derive engineering specifications

  • Design system components at the PCB level and provide design to manufacturer; debug the board and system, test and calibrate components, write, debug and modify firmware and software

  • Integrate the sensor or system into a larger system, often offsite and with other organizations

  • Act as the system expert on field tests, taking the complete system to a realistic environment, and analyze results of field tests to improve system performance and robustness

  • Work with technicians or contractors to build and rework components

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical, Electronic or Computer engineering or a similar relevant discipline

  • Experience independently designing analog electronics, including power supplies, operational amplifiers, etc. for complex systems, including schematic design, layout, build and test

  • Experience designing with and programming 8-, 16- and 32-bit microcontrollers or FPGA platforms

  • Excited to work in a lab or field environment, soldering and modifying your own designs using typical electronics lab equipment

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team, with different engineers to build and test equipment

  • Must be able to obtain TOP SECRET security clearance, while a current security clearance is strongly preferred

  • Travel typically 10-20%, with extended field tests every 1-2 years

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5 + years of experience in electrical, electronics or computer engineering

  • Experience with Altium Designer, MSP430, C2000, HC08 microprocessors

  • FPGA, digital design, high speed/RF experience a plus

  • Software programming skills in Labview, Python, C/C++, MATLAB is a plus
