Areté, an employee-owned company, is a growing research and development firm recognized for contributing to national security objectives by supplying innovative solutions to challenging technical problems faced by the United States. Our Arlington, VA office has an immediate opening for a full time Electrical Engineer reporting to the Principal Electrical Engineer. This is an exempt full-time non-supervisory position.

The candidate will be responsible for electronics and system design of sensor systems for harsh (primarily subsurface ocean) environments. Many of our sensors work at low frequencies (<1kHz) and require low-power and low-noise design techniques. The candidate will develop requirements leading to system block diagrams, develop analog and digital electronics circuit designs, lay out circuit boards and manage small scale fabrication and assembly. Candidate will debug and test the circuit board assembly and lead systems integration and testing. Candidate will support lab, remote office and in-field testing of systems of various levels of complexity.The successful candidate will have experience designing and bringing up multiple circuit boards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working independently or in a multi-disciplinary team, develop potential concepts to solve a problem, beginning by analyzing system requirements to derive engineering specifications.
  • Design analog and digital circuits for new sensing methodologies using low-power and low-noise design techniques.
  • Design system components at the PCB level and provide design to manufacturer.
  • Modify firmware, debug the board and system, test and calibrate components.
  • Integrate the sensor or system into a larger system, often offsite and with other organizations
  • Act as the system expert on field tests, taking the complete system to a realistic environment, and analyze results of field tests to improve system performance and robustness
  • Work with technicians or contractors to build and rework components.
  • Travel typically 10-20%, with opportunities for extended field tests every 1-2 years

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. or higher in Electrical Engineering or related field with 5-10 years of experience
  • Must have experience independently designing, modifying and debugging analog and digital electronics for complex systems, including schematic design, layout, build and test
  • Excited to work in a lab or field environment, soldering and modifying your own designs using typical electronics lab equipment
  • Ability to communicate clearly both written and verbally
  • Able to work in a team with minimal supervision and agility to work multiple differing projects simultaneously
  • Proven capability to develop creative solutions to complex technical problems
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience designing with and programming 8-, 16- or 32-bit microcontrollers or FPGA platforms
  • Experienced with Altium Designer, MSP430, C2000, HC08 microprocessors
  • Software programming skills in Python, C/C++, MATLAB is a plus
  • Active security clearance
  • FPGA, digital design, high speed/RF experience a plus
