We are seeking an Electrical Test Engineer (R&D S&E Electronics Engineer) to join our Weapons Subsystems 1 group, which is a multidisciplinary team engaged in designing and developing advanced electronic subsystems. This group provides solutions to technical challenges that directly support our mission and commitment to national security. For Sandia internal applicants, this is a backfill position and this position is promotion eligible.

This is a highly collaborative work environment where successful candidates will create innovative solutions for difficult technical problems and acquire increasing levels of responsibility. The general responsibilities will include electrical test design, subsystem and system test coordination, tester design (cables, test hardware, test software, equipment specification), data analysis, anomaly debug and resolution, hardware integration, providing field support, and supporting project management needs. The Electrical Test Engineer will work cooperatively with representatives from other internal organizations (systems organizations, subcomponent organizations, quality assurance, program management, and production), as well as external production facilities and suppliers.

An Electrical Test Engineer at Sandia:

+ Works as part of a multi-disciplinary team whose task will be to define requirements, create the subsystem design, implement quality design methodology, build and evaluate prototypes, test subsystems, and support full-up system integration testing
+ Leads and performs component integration and interface testing
+ Plans and organizes the hardware build schedule, coordinating multiple team members to achieve a goal
+ Coordinates testing logistics with assets coming from multiple sites
+ Develops test plans, documents test results, and gives technical presentations to peers/managers
+ Performs hands-on test and debug of circuitry
+ Drives quality and rigor into the component design process including ensuring independent peer reviews are conducted and actions are followed up on
+ Develops a system-level understanding of the collected data and support for anomaly resolution
+ Develops technical innovation to accelerate the design life cycle for high reliability components
+ Creates strategic R&D roadmaps to inform division wide investments


+ Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field of study, with at least five years of related experience or Bachelors degree in these areas with at least nine years related experience; or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education
+ Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented environment and work cooperatively with other internal organizations, as well as external production facilities and suppliers
+ Strong communication skills (especially technical writing skills), interpersonal skills, and the ability to influence others
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance
+ Ability to travel up to 25%


+ Current DOE Q clearance or DoD Top Secret clearance
+ Experience with Nuclear Weapon component or Systems development processes
+ Experience with DoD high consequence program component development processes
+ Experience in testing complex subassemblies
+ Experience in integration and testing architecture/process to accelerate design processes
+ Hands-on experience testing and debugging circuitry, with clear mastery of tools such as oscilloscopes, logic/network/ spectrum analyzers, function/pulse generators, etc.
+ Experience working with SPICE and/or MATLAB simulation of electronic circuits
+ Experience in low-power analog circuit design
+ Experience in digital firmware design for FPGA and/or ASIC applications
+ Ability to balance competing priorities and deadlines

The Weapon Subsystems 1 department develops and supports advanced electronic and mechanical weapon subsystems for high consequence applications requiring exceptionally high confidence, quality and reliability. These projects enhance the safety and security of assets that are critical to U.S. national security, including the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile.
