Job Description:

 

Candidate will lead the corporate Electrical Power, Instrumentation, and Controls (EI&C)   engineering and design organization.  This global position supervises EI&C resources, which provide oversight and assure technical correctness on capital projects domestically and internationally for Albemarle Corporation from concept through start-up.  The position will oversee the creation and maintenance of EI&C specifications and standards, which support projects and the operating assets.  Accountable for ensuring EI&C engineering and designs deliver projects and plants that are safe, operable, economical, and environmentally sound and for assessing the readiness of the EI&C activities plus deliverables at formal project gates.  The candidate will provide technical guidance for troubleshooting and problem solving when issues arise with technical designs during engineering, construction, and start-up.  Responsible for strategic development of programs and initiatives, which improve long-term improvement in facilities, infrastructure, and project delivery as these relate to EI&C.  

 

The candidate reports to the discipline engineering director and collaborates with other discipline leads, project professionals, site engineering organizations, operations, and maintenance.  Candidate must be highly motivated, an excellent communicator, with the ability to inspire and drive results through teams.  Regular travel both domestically and internationally is necessary to communicate with, oversee, and support approximately 10 direct reports responsible for the engineering and design of power distribution systems up to 230 kV, instrumentation, and industrial control systems that support projects and plants. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Demonstrated leader in HSSE and strives to achieve zero recordables.

  • Provide discipline design expertise directly, through reports, and third party contractors during front-end scope development to assure designs meet project objectives and Albemarle expectations when influence is high.

  • EI&C subject matter review of project estimates, project schedules, project design basis, engineering deliverables, and contractor selections during front-end loading and stage gate reviews called PEERs at Albemarle.

  • Supplies PEER review team members for each stage gate review of projects in four Global Business Units, sized $10 million to $2 billion. 

  • Team to provide guidance and oversight of third party contractors performing capital project front-end loading, detail design, construction, and start-up activities. 

  • Monitors and reviews specific discipline contractor activities and progress related to schedule, budget, procurement, and design quality and suggests corrective actions. 

  • Recruits, supervises, mentors, and trains direct reports and seconded personnel, as required.

  • Provide discipline design expertise to project team to review construction packages prior to release for bid and helps identify proper construction management resources.

  • Develops, reviews, and maintains EI&C design and construction specifications and standards for use worldwide.

  • Ensures that design and construction comply with Albemarle, local, and national standards.

  • On a required basis – based on manpower availability or staff development needs:

    • Provide discipline design manpower during project detailed design activities. 

    • Assist with installation issues, commissioning, start-up, and site training related to project scope.

    • Provides technical support to plant projects being performed internally that need technical guidance.

  • Provide quality assurance plans for fabricated equipment and collaborate with quality sourcing team to arrange staffing to execute factory acceptance tests.

  • Develop field inspection and test plans for construction and arrange for staffing. 

  • Support requests companywide with advice on design and troubleshooting.

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and develop solutions that improve the efficiency, quality, and speed of the discipline design process. 

  • Administer design software and act as resource for users.

  • Execute and or support EI&C safety incident reviews and root cause analysis as required.

  • Participate in development and review of corporate EI&C policies as it relates to safety and governance of the EI&C discipline.

  • Maintain current knowledge of specific design discipline industry standards and regulations and research new developments in theory and application related to deployment in the chemical process industries – Subject Matter Expert.

  • Maintain informed, comprehensive knowledge of Albemarle Corporation facilities in order to provide wide-ranging specific design discipline technical support activities and evaluation efforts, including advanced troubleshooting, problem solving, and failure analysis of systems at Albemarle Corporation facilities.

  • Work with the maintenance excellence organization to drive and/or coordinate specific design discipline initiatives to improve safety, quality, or productivity at Albemarle Corporation sites (electrical safety initiatives, safety instrumented systems, control system standardization, equipment standardization, design standardization, etc.).

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

  • BS or MS degree from an accredited college either Electrical, Instrumentation, or Controls Engineering.

  • 10 years of verifiable experience in the chemical or manufacturing industry with progressive demonstration of delivering the EI&C function on projects.

  • 5 years of experience working with large scale capital projects. 

  • 3 years of supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working with a multi-discipline design team in a complex chemical manufacturing facility.

  • Demonstrated experience of coordinating and organizing detailed engineering on global platform is preferred.

  • Possess a strong knowledge and level of expertise with common equipment used in the chemical processing industry as it relates to the EI&C discipline. 

  • Experience with major EPC (CM) and Construction contractors.

  • Ability to judge and communicate the quality requirements for engineering and construction documents.

  • Highly familiar with applicable design and building codes, standards, and best practices for chemical process plant design with knowledge of how to apply across the United States through local, state and national jurisdictions.  Familiar with international design and building codes and knowledge of applications that differ from the USA.  This demonstrated familiarity and knowledge would include specific design and evaluation experience with documents produced by agencies like, but not limited to, OSHA, NFPA, API, NEC, IEEE, IEC, ISA, etc. 

  • Ability to use and navigate electrical power studies and models developed in ETAP to determine design requirements to minimize incident energy, withstand available fault current, determine PPE requirements, and provide labeling that communicates the electrical hazards.  

  • Demonstrated experience with distributed control and programmable logic systems and industrial control system software.

  • Demonstrated experience in the design and application (sizing and selection) of instrumentation systems in a chemical manufacturing environment.

  • Demonstrated experience in reading, developing, and maintaining EI&C critical documentation such as P&IDs, electrical classification drawings, loop sheets, electrical single lines, and motor elementaries.

  • Demonstrated experience working with 60 Hz single and 3 phase electrical distribution systems at the 120V, 208V, 240V, 277V, 480V, 2400V, 4160V, 13,800V, and 34,500 volt levels.

  • Familiarity with performing work on 60 Hz electrical transmission systems between 69,000 Volts and 500,000 volts.

  • Familiarity in working with 50 Hz single and 3 phase electrical distribution systems at the 220V, 400V, 6,600V, and 11,000 volt levels.

  • Familiarity with performing work on 50 Hz electrical transmission systems between 23,000 Volts and 500,000 volts.

  • Demonstrated experience working with the NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 497 and other related electrical codes for 60 Hz electrical systems.

  • Familiarity with IEC and country specific electrical safety codes for 50 Hz systems.

  • Demonstrated experience in the development and review of EI&C project deliverables such as electrical load lists, instrument lists, design basis, specification sheets, bid tabs, cost estimates, and project schedules.

  • Familiarity with common discipline design software and/or calculation and analysis tools (DCS and PLC configuration tools, arc flash analysis software, electrical load analysis tools, instrument sizing and selection tools). 

  • Independent self-starter with results-oriented focus.

  • Excellent team skills and a demonstrated ability to work with all levels of the organization – from the laborer performing the work to communication with the CEO.

  • Proven ability in problem solving and multi-tasking.

  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent Computer skills – Word, Excel, AutoCAD, Outlook, and SharePoint.

  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 30% both domestic & international Albemarle plant sites, suppliers, and engineering contractor offices. 

  • Ability to lift 50lbs and climb stairs.

 

Desired Qualifications:

 

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer.

  • Global capital project engineering management experience.

  • Working knowledge of IPA and CII practices.

  • Experience with SAP business enterprise systems

  • Language skills beyond English (Spanish or Chinese, especially).

 

The primary location of this position can be in either Houston, TX or Charlotte, NC
