Overview of Role

Watlow is looking for an Electronic Hardware Staff Engineer with the right combination of technical and interpersonal skills who is interested in being part of the early stages of expanding and developing critical competencies at Watlow’s Advanced Development Center (ATC) in St Louis, MO. This individual will have an outstanding opportunity be a key contributor to the building and shaping of Watlow’s future.


Key Responsibilities

  • Leading and/or supporting system development and validation efforts at the ATC.

  • Providing System Engineering support to customers including EoC / VoC activities.

  • Providing general Electronics and Communications technical representation at the ATC as needed.

  • Collaborating remotely with Electronics and Communication teams and leadership in Winona.

  • Providing team leadership for new electronics and firmware engineers as they come on board at the ATC.

  • Coaching and mentoring at a technical level of more junior electronics hardware and firmware engineers.

  • Leading electronics and/or firmware development design work within project teams as needed.

  • Supporting control and prototype needs of customers and Watlow ATC team by supplying configuration and application expertise for both existing standard controls and emerging control technology prototypes 


For the first 3-6 months, travel between St. Louis, MO Advanced Technology Center (ATC) and the Electronics and Communications Advanced Development Center (ADC) in Winona, MN could be up 50% alternating between the two locations every other week.  This requirement is to build key collaborative relationships with Electronics and Communications teams and leadership in Winona.  These relationships and a solid understanding of and participation in Electronics and Communications development processes will be critical to success. Travel after this timeframe may be up to 25% to support customers and other Watlow facilities.

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field

  • Skilled technical communicator with a collaborative style that is comfortable and capable of working with people from all company disciplines which include, among others, manufacturing, engineering, sales and marketing, purchasing, finance and top company leadership.

  • Ability and passion to bring broad engineering perspective to the task of solving customer application pain from an overall system perspective.

  • Skilled in making appropriate design tradeoff decisions that maintain customer value and meet project quality, delivery and cost targets.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience doing electronics and firmware design and development of industrial embedded electronic products in multi-discipline teams from conception through product launch.


Additional Success Factors

  • Control theory and Simulink experience.

  • Experience with application of power switching devices and power conversion from 12Vdc up through 600VAC.

  • Background using RTOS and Linux for embedded applications.
