We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct researchin the development, implementation, enhancement, and application of novelenergetic materials modeling utilizing either atomistic simulation and/or continuum simulations at the grain scale. You will actively participate in research aimed toward understanding and modeling the evolution of energetic materials under shock conditions spanning large timescale. This position is in the Computational Chemistry team within the Reaction Dynamics Group of the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct fundamental research using state of the art modeling techniques to span both length and time scale in energetic modeling, interpret experimental results, and guide experimental design when appropriate.
- Develop fundamental reaction mechanisms for defined problems and/or apply known reaction mechanism into grain scale simulations.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Document research; write and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community, at working group meetings, and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering or related fields.
- Experience in setting up and performing atomistic or hydrodynamic simulations coupled to experiments.
- Experience in equations of state and materials models.
- Experience in conceiving and implementing numerical methods in a high level language (e.g., Fortran, C++, other) for highly parallel codes.
- Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in published papers and effectivepresentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in using scripting languages (e.g., Perl, Python, other) for automation and analysis, and in algorithmic development within a large software suite using CUDA.
- Knowledge of shock wave physics.
- Experience in rare events sampling to elucidate reaction mechanisms or adopting known reaction mechanisms into hydrodynamic simulations.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
