Job Summary and Description:

Performs complex engineering/ scientific analysis with moderate direction and supervision. Works directly with EPRI staff and moderate interaction with members and industry.

• Conducts technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team.

• May conduct independent research.

• Assists Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations.

 

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Must have satisfied requirements of entry level engineer/scientist and have 2-3 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.

• Intermediate verbal and written communication skills

• Present research externally

• Understand how work fits across technical area

• Requires supervision and guidance to conduct specific research tasks and complete projects

• Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research

• May participate in multiple projects

• Individual contributor

  

Additional Job Information:

Power systems engineer in the Grid Operations and Planning research team with excellent software development skills, as well as communication and interpersonal skills, but still willing and able to take guidance from senior staff. The position will also have increasing responsibility contributing to development and management of power system operations, planning and protection research software tools, and working with commercial vendors and EPRI members for efficient technology transfer of software tools.

Candidate must be able to perform advanced engineering/scientific analysis with minimal direction and supervision. Candidate will need to demonstrate creativity and ingenuity in providing software solutions and analytical solutions. Candidate will work directly with senior EPRI staff and will have significant interaction with members and the power system industry.

 

Job Functions:
This position will provide power systems engineering and software development expertise, as well as analytical services for existing and new grid operations and planning research projects. The research topics for which this position may provide engineering and software support include power system dynamic model development, validation, and simulation, variable generation integration studies and modeling, Distributed Energy Resources (DER) modeling for bulk system studies, risk-based system planning methods, advanced power flow and contingency analysis methods, transmission protection, synchrophasor-based system assessment applications, and other operational system assessment functions. This position will take direction from senior staff to develop grid operations and planning software solutions, including specifications to demonstrate and test research, and implement the solutions using appropriate languages and database. The position will ensure all software are in accordance with the EPRI software quality assurance requirements.

  • Provide advice and counsel to others within the team on developing software applications using state-of-the-art software practices and tools. This would include coding standards, documentation and targeted platforms for long-term maintenance and support of software.
  • Develops software specifications, implementation plan and follows EPRI requirements on developing and testing software tools.
  • Communicate routinely with EPRI technical staff and may prepare and give presentations at customer meetings.
  • Conduct studies and simulation using different power system tools supporting various projects (e.g., PSS/E, PSLF, POM, VSAT, PowerFactory). Tasks may also include developing scripts using APIs (e.g, psspy, Python powerfactory, EPCL) provided by some of the commercial software tools.
  • Develops innovative solutions to link various simulation tools, software platforms as required by the project.
  • Works with project managers to develop a plan for tech transfer of software products
  • Works under general supervision, and follows established procedure. Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment, overall adequacy, and accuracy.

 

EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
