Engineering Fellow - Warheads

The Engineering Fellow position is in the Energetics and Propulsion Department of the Mechanical Products Team. This organization is responsible for the full spectrum of warhead, fuzing, and propulsion designs/technology, including power systems, ignition, and all other weapon initiation safety systems technology. This individual would develop architectures, top level design concepts, requirements, and performance modeling for new payload systems and other energetic needs.

The successful candidate will:

Conduct and oversee hydrocode analysis of warheads and other high strain rate dynamic events
Apply and/or develop advanced warhead technologies using scientific principles, theories and concepts to the weapon warhead system for implementation into missiles
Provide technical oversight to subcontractors
Mentor a team of junior and senior analysis engineers in hydrocode simulation, results interpretation, and data processing
Guide hardware and software acquisitions to meet Raytheon technical and financial goals
Support the Safety Engineering organization by planning and performing insensitive munitions and safety analyses as needed

Required Experience and Skills:

A minimum of 12 years of experience in Hydrocode analysis
Extensive, demonstrated, experience with two of the following hydrocodes:


Proficiency with data processing tools (MATLAB, Python, C++, FORTRAN, etc)
Demonstrated understanding of constitutive models and equations of state (EOSs) and their development
Proficiency in development of finite element meshes using Cubit, TrueGrid, or related tool
Demonstrated knowledge of / experience in:

Engineering design in development projects
Warhead or Energetic Device Design & Analyses
Design and analysis of mechanical subsystems
Ordnance manufacturing process technologies
Insensitive Munitions mitigation technology (design, materials)

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Project)
Development of warhead Technical Performance Measures (TPM), Key Product Characteristics (KPC), Key Characteristic Control (KCC)
Co-development of threat defeat requirements from system lethality analyses and validating design lethality implementation in flight simulators
Proposal and cost preparation, requirements definition, and warhead subsystems analysis, test and verification; operational test support; supplier collaboration
Warhead subsystem technology readiness level (TRL) maturation
Validation and verification of lethality elements in system performance modelling from development and qualification tests of subsystems
Available to travel to suppliers and government facilities
Currently have or be able to obtain a DoD issued Secret security clearance
United States citizenship

Degree Requirements:

Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Eng., Mechanical Eng., Materials Science Eng., or related discipline

Desired Experience and Skills:

Experience in conducting statistical lethality analysis using AJEM, General Full-Spray, RAVAGE, or related tool
Experience using CREO for CAD model generation
25 years of directly related experience in warhead subsystems design, development, and test
Supplier collaboration experience and oversight generating specifications and statements of work (SOW)
Experience in business development and technology road mapping
Demonstrated success as a team leader
Advanced experience in code development and data processing
Masters or PhD. in Aerospace Eng., Mechanical Eng., Materials Science Eng., or related discipline

Key Responsibilities (essential functions):

Develop strategic and technology development roadmaps for Hydrocode and lethality analysis
Lead development of design concepts for target defeat mechanisms (warheads)
Design, analyze, test and evaluate warhead systems
Perform warhead system/component design and optimization
Provide technical oversight of subcontracted analysis activities and provide technical direction to hydrocode engineers
Support failure analysis and corrective action through analysis redesign of failed warhead components or systems
Present warhead design models and supporting analyses/test results to internal and external customer review meetings
Support proposals requiring warhead technologies and hydrocode / lethality analysis
Provide counsel and mentoring for junior/senior members of the Department
Oversee fact-finding and contract negotiations
Test data reduction and quantitative comparison to predictions
Generate warhead performance data files for use in performance assessments and requirements compliance
Ensure technical rigor and depth of all deliverables
