Engineering Program/Project Lead (Experienced)

We are seeking a highly-motivated person who is passionate about building a safe and healthy work culture to join our dynamic Safety and Health Engineering team as the Engineering Program/Project Lead.

On any given day, you may be asked to:

+ Perform assessment of a wide variety of pressure systems from R&D laboratory systems to facility systems to production systems.
+ Assure Sandias Pressure Safety program not only is compliant with all laws and regulations but is also a model for the NNSA/DOE communities.
+ Identify problems and identify potential control strategies to mitigate or control risks.
+ Perform technical pressure safety program assessments.
+ Collaborate with other highly-trained professionals to strengthen the pressure safety program and ensure efficient implementation.
+ Work in partnership with senior leadership, mission execution organizations, other Safety and Health Engineering staff, and others as needed to assure safety and mission success.

This position requires occasionally working a modified work schedule, travel, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.


+ Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
+ Ten or more years of relevant experience with complex Pressure Safety operations, including Pressure Safety, Engineering, Operations, and Quality.
+ Knowledge and experience in the design of pressure systems according to applicable pressure safety codes, including ASME B31.3 and ASME B16.5.
+ Ability to apply knowledge and experience for safe design and operation of unique systems not applicable to design codes.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and higher clearances as necessary.


+ Pressure Safety program development and operation in a complex dynamic environment.
+ Work experience applying safety principles in a research and development environment.
+ Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
+ Experience performing safety training.
+ Experience with conducting readiness reviews.
+ Understanding of DOE orders/codes/standards.
+ Current DOE L-level or Q-level security clearance.
+ Experience in roles such as Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) pressure advisor, pressure installer, or pressure operator and implementing pressure safety requirements on SNL applications are positive attributes that will be considered.
+ Formal training and knowledge of vacuum and cryogen technologies (liquid nitrogen, liquid helium, etc.).
+ Broad understanding of OSHA regulations, ASME Codes, NFPA Codes, DOT regulations, CGA, ANSI standards and DOE/DOD Orders/standards will be valued.
+ ASME certification related to pressure safety.
+ CSP (Certified Safety Professional).
+ Self-starter who can work with line customers and other Safety professionals in a fast-paced, critical deadline, teaming atmosphere.
+ Strong customer service and teamwork experience.
+ Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
+ Ability to work effectively with others.

Department Description:

Safety and Health Engineering provides the tools and expertise to evaluate and control occupational hazards that may occur during work, while also ensuring SNL meets contractual and promulgated worker safety and health requirements. Safety and Health Engineering is responsible for a diverse set of occupational safety and health programs that includes Pressure Safety, Electrical Safety, Confined Space, Laser Safety, Respiratory Protection, Chemical Safety and Hearing Conservation along with many others.

Security Clearance:
