If so, we are seeking a highly-motivated Explosives Safety Engineer who is passionate about supporting a safe and healthy work culture. Join our Safety and Health Engineering team! The position requires performing high-quality, technically-sound assessment of explosives operations. This role has high visibility with both laboratory wide impact and NNSA/DOE complex impact.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Provide Explosives Safety subject matter expertise on a wide variety of explosives operations and activities ranging from R&D laboratory work such as small-scale synthesis of energetic materials to field testing, large scale demolition operations, and rocket launches.
+ Assist line organizations in the development of work planning and control (WP&C) packages associated with explosives operations including Hazard Analysis, Safety Cases, Operating Procedures.
+ Identify failure modes for integrated systems and R&D activities involving explosives and identify potential control strategies to mitigate or control risk.
+ Identify permissible exposures for explosive operations and determine safe separation distances for blast over pressure and fragmentation protection.
+ Incorporate corporate explosives safety program specifications, standards, and procedures.
+ Collaborate with other highly-trained professionals across the occupational safety and health disciplines and line management to ensure proper work hazard evaluation and control.

_This position requires occasionally working a modified work schedule, travel to remote sites unplanned, and work outdoors in all weather conditions. In this role, you will have responsibility for explosives safety sites. This may include but is not limited to Sandia NM, Sandia CA, Tonopah Test Range, Kauai Launch Complex, and other remote locations._


+ Bachelor of Science (BS) in engineering or similar discipline with a minimum of (5) years of relevant experience; or a minimum of (13) years of explosives safety experience; or experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the job.
+ Demonstrated experience in the application and use of explosive safety techniques and practices on large and small scale.
+ Advanced knowledge of Explosives Safety regulations and drivers.
+ The ability to obtain and maintain a required DOE Q-level security clearance.


+ Graduate of NAVSCOLEOD.
+ Knowledge of explosives site planning of explosives storage operations/storage facilities and intentional detonation sites, including but not limited to:

- Advanced knowledge of Explosives Safety Siting (ESS).
- Determining personnel protection and lightning protection.
- Determining explosive effects and permissible exposures.
- Determining hazard classification and compatibility groups.
- Performing explosives Quantity Distance (QD) criteria assessments.
+ Advanced knowledge of explosive safety standards and technical manuals and the application of principles identified therein. Examples include but are not limited to: DOE-STD-1212-2019, AFMAN 91-201, DESR 6055.09, NAVSEA OP-5 Volume 1, DDESB Technical papers, DoD Contractor Safety Manual, AFSPCMAN-91-710, AFI 91-208, NAVSEA OP 3565 Volume 2, 49 CFR, and TB 700-2.
+ Experience in the application of electrical safety principles applied to explosive operations such as arming and firing activities using Low and High Voltage Firing Systems.
+ Demonstrated experience in the application and use of explosive safety techniques and practices in Research & Development (R&D), large scale demolition, or laboratory environments.
+ Qualification as an explosive operator.
+ Working knowledge of Safety Assessment for Explosives Risk (SAFER).
+ Working knowledge of EIS/Oracle or demonstrated experience managing explosive inventories.
+ ASP/CSP certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
+ Experience as a classroom instructor.
+ Experience with conducting readiness reviews, causal analysis, or accident investigations.
+ Ability to provide service to a diverse set of customers in a fast-paced, critical deadline, cooperative teaming atmosphere.
+ Excellent communication skills.
+ Current DOE L or Q-level security clearance

Safety and Health Engineering is responsible for a diverse set of occupational safety and health programs that include Explosives Safety, Electrical Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Aviation Safety, Chemical Safety, Bio Safety, and Respiratory Protection along with many others.

Security Clearance:
