We have an opening for an Engineering Technical Associate/Sr. Engineering Associate to provide mechanical fabrication, repair, test, maintenance, and design support for work on projects and initiatives with a focus on U.S. national security. Other responsibilities may involve characterization and documentation support. Interactions will be with project leaders, experimentalists, engineers, technical supervisors, technicians, and designers. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate at LLNL.

This position will be filled at either the 337.1 or 339.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Design, fabricate, test, maintain, and assembly mechanical spacecraft subsystems from conceptualization, through fabrication and acceptance testing utilizing CREO, Solidworks, and/or other design tools.
- Exercise best practices for space hardware design when considering mission CONOPS and environmental requirements.
- Prepare documentation, reports and test plans in support design reviews and mission execution.
- Contribute directly to payload and/or space vehicle assembly
- Interface with customer organizations, payload science experts, analysts, manufacturing engineers, machinists, and project staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In addition, at the 339.2 Level
- Apply creative solutions to resolve highly complex technical and programmatic issues.
- Make frequent decisions using a high degree of independent discretion and judgement to define project approaches and create and implement original solutions.

- Bachelors degree in Engineering Technology or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Advanced knowledge of the mechanical design, fabrication and assembly of spacecraft subsystems.
- Significant experience working with mechanical fabrication tools.
- Significant experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary project team that may include engineers, scientists, designers, machinists, and technicians.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment including presenting and explaining technical information to colleagues, management, or sponsors.

In addition, at the 339.2 Level
- Extensive experience developing conceptual designs, implementing, and/or testing prototypes.
- Extensive experience collaborating with high-level scientists/engineers and/or senior managers at the division and/or department level or equivalent.
- Experience in formal design reviews, technical presentations, and the ability to interact effectively with people at all levels.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with classified materials, marking requirements for drawings, documentation, and data.
- Experience with aerospace and/or spacecraft design, assembly or testing of flight hardware.
- Knowledge of one or more of the following spacecraft systems and subsystems: attitude, propulsion, power, data handling and on-board processing, thermal, structures and mechanisms, TT&C, or payload.
- Familiar with LLNLs Engineering Design Safety Standards, Work Planning and Control, ES&H guidelines or equivalent.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.If you are selected, we willinitiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.For additional information, please see DOE Order 472.2.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
