Environmental Chemist

We have an opening for a Staff Scientist in the Environmental Monitoring Radioanalytical Laboratory (EMRL) Group in the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences (NACS) Division. You will provide comprehensive technical support in a NACS Analytical Laboratory by independently performing a variety of chemical analyses of environmental samples and use nuclear counting instruments.  You will help the laboratory remain accredited from the state of California as well as be compliant with LLNL policies, Department of Energy Orders, and federal regulations.  

In this role you will 

  • Perform bench chemistry in a low-level radiochemistry laboratory.  Work with a high volume of environmental samples for determination of various radionuclides in support of LLNL reporting requirements.  Tasks include chemical digestion of samples, separation chemistry and preparing samples for nuclear counting or analysis by ICPMS.
  • Use of nuclear counting instrumentation for determination of radionuclides in samples. Instrumentation would include Gas Flow Proportional Counter, Liquid Scintillation Counter among other instruments. Performing tasks to keep lab operations functioning including ordering supplies and housekeeping activities.
  • Assist with QA/QC functions including periodic review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), maintaining control charts for instrumentation functions and verifying record logs for various laboratory equipment (pipettes, balances etc.).
  • Author reports and documentation for internal and external use.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, or other scientific or technical area or related field or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience working as a bench chemist, using Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), with deadlines for sample completion and data reporting.
  • Experience operating and evaluating data produced from advanced analytical instrumentation (such as Gas Chromatographs, Ion Chromatography etc.) or nuclear counting instrumentation (such as Liquid Scintillation Counters, Gas Flow Proportional Counters etc.).
  • Knowledge of common software programs including Excel, Teams and other Office365 apps.
  • Experience with sample and records management responsibilities along with laboratory workflow processes governed by a Quality Assurance (QA) program.
  • Demonstrated effective organizational skills with detail orientation necessary to handle multiple moderately complex tasks while providing high-level customer service and good follow through.
  • Proficient communication skills necessary to effectively present, explain, advise, and communicate moderately complex technical information to all levels of personnel to LLNL.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience working in a radiochemistry laboratory either at the benchtop level or utilizing nuclear counting instrumentation.
  • Experience using specialized laboratory software including Labworks LIMS and Crystal Reports.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and modifying SOP's for compliance with certifications or implementing improvements in method analyses
