Job Description

A full-time research faculty position is available to serve as Chief of the Electronic Warfare Modeling and Analysis Division (EWMAD) within GTRI’s Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory.  EWMAD performs advanced research that involves analysis, digital modeling and simulation, and algorithm development for EO/IR and RF self-protection systems and countermeasures installed on aircraft and other DoD platforms.  The division specializes intensive physics-based modeling of signatures (from scenes/backgrounds, aircraft, threats, and countermeasures), atmospheric propagation, sensor and seeker performance, and platform and threat kinematics across the EO/IR and RF spectrum.  This modeling is used to simulate end-to-end threat engagements that support robust performance evaluation of existing warning systems and countermeasures and to enable the development of new systems and algorithms.

This position is responsible for leading the Division’s sponsored and internal research and development programs, sponsor relationship management, and development of new business in alignment with Division, Laboratory and GTRI strategies.  This position will have oversight of the Division’s personnel, consisting of 4 branches and approximately 30 researchers, and will be responsible for recruiting highly qualified researchers to meet expanding sponsor requirements.  Candidates must have demonstrated experience managing the personnel, technical, and administrative aspects of a team comprised of highly technical and experienced research faculty.  The responsibilities for this position include recruiting, onboarding, personnel development and mentoring, and evaluating and documenting researcher and supervisor performance.  Prior management experience supervising teams of research faculty at the branch level (or equivalent) is required, and prior second-level leadership experience that includes supervision of other functional managers is preferred.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Master’s degree in Physics, Math, EE, Aerospace Engineering and ten(10) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Doctoral degree in Physics, Math, EE, Aerospace Engineering and four (4) years' relevant full-time experience. 

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist   

  • A Master's degree in Physics, Math, EE, Aerospace Engineering and eleven (11) years' relevant full-time experience; or
  • A Doctoral degree in Physics, Math, EE, Aerospace Engineering and seven (7) years' relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

This position requires an MS or PhD and 10+ years of professional experience with previous organizational leadership (personnel, technical, and administrative) experience, and candidates must have already obtained the rank of Senior or Principal Research Engineer/Scientist at GTRI.  The successful candidate will work with lab leadership to expand existing electronic warfare modeling and analysis research programs, target key DoD customers to grow the research portfolio in these areas, and be responsible for growing and leading a division of engineers and scientists directing and supporting those efforts.  Technical interests of candidates should be closely aligned to modeling and analysis of electronic warfare systems and candidates must have demonstrated and documented expertise in at least one, and preferably two or more of the following technology areas:

     - Electronic Warfare/Platform Self-Protection
     - Digital Modeling and Simulation (from one-on-one to many-on-many)
     - Threat Warning (EO/IR and RF)
     - Countermeasures (EO/IR and RF)
     - Active Protection Systems
     - Machine Learning/Algorithm Development

The selected candidate shall have a successful record of technical and organizational leadership as well as a proven ability to attract funding for sponsored research as demonstrated by significant experience as the level-one principal investigator for sponsored programs.  EWMAD has a strong reputation with a longstanding sponsor base that has existed for 20+ years, therefore the successful candidate will be expected to define, refine and drive the strategic thrust of the division.  The Division Chief must be able to preserve existing sponsor relationships as well as develop new and productive business relationships in support of the division's strategic direction. This person will be expected to leverage their current government and industry relationships to lead, develop, support, and grow new technical thrusts.

Candidates must demonstrate exceptional communication skills, both written and oral, and should have experience briefing program activities directly to senior level (SES and Flag/General Officer) sponsors within the government.  Ideally, the selected candidate will be nationally recognized in the industry, as evidenced by noteworthy journal and/or conference publications, session leadership at national symposia, membership on national committees, and involvement in relevant professional societies at the Senior-level or above.  Due to the nature of the work performed within this division, an existing (or active within the past 2 years) SECRET security clearance and the ability to obtain a TOP SECRET security clearance is required, and an existing TOP SECRET clearance level is strongly preferred.
