What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Radiation Experiments department is seeking an experimental scientist to lead innovative research in the areas of radiation source development, radiation effects, x-ray spectroscopy, and applied atomic physics.

The department primarily performs research using the Z machine, the world’s largest pulsed power generator and one of the nation’s three major High Energy Density (HED) physics facilities. This position will involve collaboration within the department, the Pulsed Power Sciences Center at Sandia, the Radiation and Electrical Sciences Center at Sandia, and the national High Energy Density Physics community to address key questions in developing and understanding HED radiation sources .

On any day, your work may include

+ Leading the development, design, and realization of innovative HED experimental platforms on the Z pulsed power facility

+ Collaboratively supporting experiments studying the response of systems and materials to extreme radiation environments in support of Stockpile Stewardship

+ Teaming within the Center in applying atomic physics and radiation-magnetohydrodynamics models to understand plasma conditions and dynamics using x-ray spectroscopy and other data

+ Developing and using novel data analysis methods and algorithms

+ Presenting at national and international conferences and documenting your work in peer reviewed journals

Qualifications We Require:

+ PhD in plasma physics, electrical engineering, nuclear physics or a related field, or equivalent education and experience in a related field

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse, multi-pronged team of experimental and computational scientists, engineers, and technologists

+ Demonstrated ability to develop and lead impactful HED or radiation physics experiments

+ Experience with x-ray spectroscopy and applied atomic physics

+ Strong publication and presentation record

+ Demonstrated history of successful multi-institution collaborations

About Our Team:

The Radiation Experiments department (01688) leads experiments at the Z facility that study the interaction of x-ray radiation with matter. We maintain expertise in plasma and atomic physics, z-pinch experimentation, and x-ray spectroscopy. We engage in the development of intense x-ray sources for national radiation effects missions, high-energy-density studies of material opacity, and astrophysical studies of radiation physics . The department has active collaborations with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Naval Research Laboratory, and a variety of universities.

Security Clearance:
