We have an opening for an Experimental Nuclear Physicist to work within a team on Space-based Nuclear Detonation Detection (SNDD).You will be part of a team that works on verification and validation of models of photon (spanning radio-frequency, optical, Xray and gamma) and neutron signatures of nuclear detonations.Responsibilities include becoming knowledgeable on the generation, atmospheric transport, and detection of neutron and photon signatures.This work will also involve the application of modern tools for verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification of complex, scientific models. This position is in the Nuclear and Particle Physics group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

Essential Duties
- Perform verification and validation of complex models for simulating aspects of nuclear. detonation and detection from space.
- Utilize complex models to simulate satellite detection of nuclear detonations.
- Evaluate system performance for various architectures and approaches.
- Evaluate detector performance in the context of operational requirements.
- Evaluate models for atmospheric propagation of neutrons and photons.
- Perform large scale simulations, synthesize and analyze results.
- Document all relevant analysis and evaluations in the form of technical notes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- PhD in engineering or physics, or related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience and familiarity with C++ and Python.
- Significant experience contributing to and working with complex, scientific programs.
- Experience working with High Performance Computing.
- Advanced knowledge of principles of radiation detection and signal processing.
- Advanced knowledge of atmospheric propagation of neutrons and photons.
- Proficient communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment.
- Ability to document and present research results.

- Ability to coordinate complex tasks by interacting independently with professionals in the execution of responsibilities.
- Interest in contributing to advancing our understanding of nuclear attribution and non-proliferation methods.
- Experience interacting in a safe and secure work environment while supporting activities across organizational boundaries.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
