Job Description

The Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) Engineer in the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Applied Embedded Systems (AES) Division will develop, design, and analyze firmware supporting electronic systems as well as lead multi-disciplinary engineering project teams. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications.

Job Duties

  • Analyze system and functional requirements to develop solutions
  • Design, develop and validate firmware (VHDL, Verilog)
  • Develop test benches and simulations to test and validate designs
  • Integrate system components and support equipment in laboratory and field settings
  • Serve as a technical expert on assigned projects and systems to include keeping up-to-date on industry standards, system interfaces, engineering tools, and road maps for current and future updates
  • Participate in technical meetings with GTRI and sponsor personnel
  • Develop technical papers for conferences, speak publicly, and present briefings to potential customers
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or other engineering/science-related fields of study.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist II

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or other engineering/science-related fields of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or other engineering/science-related fields of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or other engineering/science-related fields of study.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with Xilinx or Altera/Intel FPGAs
  • Experience with debugging and test

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with VHDL or Verilog
  • Experience with embedded processors such as Microblaze or FPGA System-on-a-Chip (SoC)
  • Experience with embedded software (C/C++)
  • 2+ years of experience in FPGA development
  • Experience with high-speed digital sampling and processing of Radio Frequency (RF) signals
  • Experience developing systems for military or high-reliability applications
  • Active SECRET clearance

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
