Genetic Engineering - Postdoctoral Researcher

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Livermore, CA 94550

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2019 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

The Biosciences and Biotechnology Division has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcherto study how mammalian and bacterial cells respond to genetic engineering methods. The successful candidate will create gene edited mammalian and bacterial cells using CRISPR/Cas and then use nucleic acid sequencing to characterize the cellular changes that occur. This work will enable us to better understand the impacts of gene editing on the whole cell. Candidates should have an interest in learning new skills and techniques and applying them to solve real-world scientific problems that inform the safe use of these technologies for medical applications.

Essential Duties
- Design and conduct experiments in mammalian and bacterial cells using CRISPR/Cas gene editing technologies and assess off-target biological effects.
- Perform molecular biology and biochemical assays to confirm genome edits.
- Produce and analyze genomic and transcriptomic sequencing datasets from engineered cells to characterize stress response pathway activation.
- Design and validate nucleic acid-based assays to monitor cellular responses to CRISPR/Cas activity.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research at seminars, technical meetings, and national and international conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Systems/Synthetic Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genomics, Bioengineering, or a related field.
- Experience with synthetic biology and gene editing technologies (e.g., CRISPR/Cas) in bacteria and/or mammalian cells.
- Experience with molecular biology and cloning.
- Experience with generating and characterizing mammalian and bacterial cell lines, retroviral/lentiviral transductions, transfections, and aseptic cell culture technique.
- Familiarity with genome and transcriptome sequencing.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
-Abilityto develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with culturing Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in anaerobic and aerobic environments.
- Familiarity working with and analyzing large, multi-omics datasets.
- Proficiency in the use of PC or Mac software for word processing and presentations.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: None required.

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
