Geophysical Imaging and Full Waveform Inversion - Postdoctoral Researcher

We have an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Scientist to develop computational methods for geophysical imaging on next generation computing platforms. You will work with a team of geophysicists and computer scientists to implement full waveform inversion techniques on hybrid CPU / GPU architectures, including several of the world's largest supercomputers. This position will be in the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division at LLNL.

In this role you will

  • Conduct research in the areas of geophysical imaging, elastic wave propagation, and full waveform inversion techniques.
  • Implement high-performance seismic imaging algorithms on hybrid CPU/GPU systems, including forward wave propagation and property inversion techniques.
  • Analyze code performance using profiling tools to identify and remove bottlenecks.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals. Present work at conferences and other technical forums.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • PhD in geophysics, earth sciences, computer science, applied mathematics, or a related field.
  • Experience with seismic wave propagation and geophysical imaging techniques.
  • Significant experience with code development and high-performance computing, including C++ programming and parallel computing models.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop independent research projects and publish peer-reviewed articles.
  • Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and explain technical information.
  • Demonstrated initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a diverse, collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications we desire

  • Experience with GPU computing, including relevant programming languages.
  • Experience with code profiling tools.
  • Experience with modern software development environments, including version control and testing frameworks.
  • Experience with field applications of seismic imaging.

Position Information

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
