Hardware Security Engineer (Early/Mid-Career)

If so, the Digital Systems Security team has multiple openings for highly motivated and hardworking hardware/embedded systems security researchers (R&D S&E, Cybersecurity) passionate about securing and designing digital systems for the national security mission.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Support system-level security risk assessment and provide vulnerability remediation guidance and recommendations
+ Review designs, and validate hardware security implementations of digital systems
+ Identify and present innovative security solutions for the system team
+ Participate in technical design reviews and provide clear feedback and actionable solutions
+ Develop applicable security policies and requirements
+ Conduct threat assessment and red-teaming exercises
+ Champion security best practices and serve as a security subject matter expert for the design teams
+ Partner with system development teams to create secure product designs


+ Master's degree in relevant discipline or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
+ Security research experience, preferably hardware and embedded systems security
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance


+ Degree(s) in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline
+ Experience conducting research resulting in creative technical solutions
+ Have offensive security mindset
+ Experience in hardware security, hardware development, formal methods, applied cryptography, vulnerability assessment, security threat models, risk assessment, systems engineering
+ Experience with security requirements and assurance (NIST, CNSS, etc.), with working knowledge of risk management frameworks,
+ Experience auditing code in C/C++, Java, Python, assembly, or other languages
+ Strong analytical skills
+ Familiarity with secure-system design principles and information assurance principles
+ Well-developed leadership skills with the ability to prioritize and execute in a disciplined and focused manner
+ Active DOE Q security clearance

Department Description:

The new Cyber Resilient Systems department will be a new department housed in the Information Security Sciences group. The group currently focuses on four major areas of research and development: (1) Emulytics, (2) cyber systems vulnerability analyses and assessments, (3) data analytics and (4) cyber enterprise protection. This combination allows the group to focus on the intersection of modeling and simulation, data analysis and operations all in the context of cyber. This department will allow the group to more holistically support the Energy and Homeland Security Program Management Center as it brings the Laboratory's cyber knowledge to the area of critical infrastructure.The Cyber Resilient Systems department is primarily responsible for understanding the operational needs of critical infrastructure cyber enterprises and fielding the expertise necessary to support those requirements. The department will over time comprise a unique team whose members have a deep understanding of the cyber needs of the energy critical infrastructure sector as well as systems-level understanding of operational cyber technologies. The portfolio emphasizes efforts to secure government and critical infrastructure systems against highly sophisticated, well-resourced attacks. The department's specialties include sector-focused enterprise-level vulnerability assessments, and development and assessment of mitigation approaches. The staff in the department have expertise in critical infrastructure, computer science, cyber operations and related fields. The members of this department will work in support of subject matter experts in the energy programs. These efforts are deployed in support of multiple networks for our sponsor and many customers.

Security Clearance:
