The US Naval Research Laboratory’s Optical Sciences Division (OSD) is seeking applications for a new Head of the Optical Physics Branch.

The Optical Physics Branch supports the OSD with basic and applied research and advanced technology development aimed at harnessing light-matter interactions to provide improved capabilities for the Department of the Navy and the Department of Defense. Specific technology areas of interest include:
nanotechnology; quantum science and technology; nonlinear optical and electro-optical materials; visible and infrared lasers; and synthesis of novel organic and hybrid organic/inorganic materials. The Branch Head defines, leads and manages highly challenging and innovative scientific and technical activities in these areas. The Branch Head independently directs the Branch’s overall research and development program. The Branch Head is also responsible for managing Branch finances and personnel, as well as facilities and equipment.

Applicants' resumes must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at the NP-3 pay band (GS-11 through GS-13 in the Federal service) or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. This applicant is expected to be a nationally recognized expert in one or more areas of optical physics and possess a demonstrated capability of successfully leading a large and diverse group of researchers. They should also have a history of research community involvement (e.g., serving as conference/session chair, giving invited talks, etc.). Candidates should also demonstrate competencies in business development and technology transfer in the context of a customer focused Navy Working Capital Fund business model.   Prospective candidates must be U.S. Citizens and will be required to obtain and maintain a SECRET level security clearance.
