The Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Radiation Protection Organization is seeking a Health Physicist/Radiological Engineer to provide technical support at SNLs outstanding and one of a kind accelerator facilities. Daily you will have the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of scientists, engineers and technologists. Expectations include, engaging with groups of professionals and technologist in implementing work plans and solving technical issues. You will be asked to use your education and experience to assist with unique solutions to unique Health Physics/ Radiological Engineering problems. This position is not for everybody, but if you have passion, an imagination in the solving of technical problems, a desire to grow in your technical abilities, and enjoy a hands-on approach to operational Health Physics, then you could be the professional we are seeking to join our team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform radiological hazard evaluations.
+ Design and implement radiological protection safety programs.
+ Assist line organizations to implement operational aspects of the SNL Radiation Protection Program.
+ Recommend appropriate controls, develop radiological monitoring protocols, assess program efficiency and line implementation.
+ Assist with incident review and analysis, develop corrective action plans and lessons learned, and provide oversight of radiological control technicians (RCTs).
+ Respond to and advise others in incident and emergency response situations.

Work assignments may change frequently.

Some travel may be required.

Activities include working with or in the presence of hazardous materials. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.


+ Bachelors degree in a relevant field, health physics or nuclear engineering preferred, and 5 years of operational Health Physics experience or a Master's degree in a relevant field, health physics or nuclear engineering preferred.
+ Ability to effectively work independently and in teamed/matrixed situations in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
+ Working knowledge of 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20.
+ Current computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
+ Ability to occasionally work a modified schedule to meet customer needs and travel.
+ Possess a valid drivers license and access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work locations.
+ Able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy L or Q-level security clearance.


+ Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
+ Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills and flexibility.
+ Excellent organizational skills.
+ Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or in the process of obtaining certification.
+ Experience working in an Research & Development environment.
+ Experience working in an operational Health Physics setting.
+ Experience working in a regulated environment such as DOE or NRC facilities.
+ Active DOE L-level or Q-Level security clearance.

Department Description:

The Radiation Protection Organization provides radiation protection support services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the Corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the Corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations.

Security Clearance:
