Job Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Systems Engineering Research Division (SERD) is currently seeking a Research Scientist / Research Engineer for the Human Systems Engineering Branch (HSEB). HSEB is predominantly focused on the research, development and application of human systems engineering methods to the design, development, and evaluation of complex systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Conducting research on human performance
  • Performing analyses of human performance in engineered systems, including both cognitive and physical aspects
  • Designing and evaluating hardware and software user interfaces
  • Developing conceptual and computational models of human performance
  • Identifying criteria related to personnel, manpower, and training issues associated with complex systems
  • Writing analyses and documents to support human systems engineering activities.

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Human Factors (e.g., Industrial Engineering, Psychology, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, etc.) or related field.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Masters degree in Human Factors (e.g., Industrial Engineering, Psychology, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, etc.) or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Human Factors (e.g., Industrial Engineering, Psychology, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, etc.) or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Human Factors (e.g., Industrial Engineering, Psychology, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, etc.) or related field.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelors degree program relevant to this position will be considered. Candidate must have a graduation date of no later than May, 2020.
  • Familiarity with various types of cognitive task analyses, functional analyses, and job task analyses.
  • Experience with user centered design (research, design, and evaluation).
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting cognitive task analyses and function analyses
  • Experience with information architectures, wireframing, interaction design, and / or visual design.
  • Experience with techniques and approaches for measuring workload, situation awareness, usability, human performance, and user acceptance
  • Experience developing surveys and interview instruments
  • Knowledge of experimental design and statistics (basic descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, structural equation modeling)
  • Experience with Mobile Design
  • Demonstrable interest in manned-unmanned teaming, quantifying human performance, and/or graphical user interface design.

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
