Who are we Looking for?

 

We are seeking an experienced and self-directed Mechanical HVAC and Plumbing Engineer to anchor our Mechanical Discipline providing design services to our engineering practices across the firm. The successful candidate will be proficient and experienced in leading and executing mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing design and construction packages on both stand-alone projects and as part of large multidisciplinary project teams. The successful candidate must be able to support several project managers and design teams serving various markets including water treatment, industrial and municipal wastewater infrastructure, industrial utilities, and some light commercial and building services.

 

We are looking for the successful candidate to focus on project execution, build a strong reputation for technical expertise and project delivery success within the organization, and develop a strategy for growth and technical capability. The growth potential for this position is into the discipline lead role which requires balancing the technical requirements of the job with management of a small team and business development support.

The location for this position is flexible:  Dedham, MA, Andover, MA, Providence, RI, Portland, ME, Enfield, CT, or Middletown, CT.

 

What you will be doing at Woodard & Curran:

 

  • The candidate will have experience in the design, specification, construction document development, bidding, construction, field engineering, and startup support of industrial, municipal, and commercial HVAC, plumbing, utility and process systems. This includes layout, equipment selection, heating & cooling load calculations, sanitary, waste, vent, domestic cold water, domestic hot water and hydronic heating piping, ductwork design, and general coordination of these mechanical discipline components for multidisciplinary projects.
  • Design experience shall also include but is not limited to Air Handling Units, Energy Recovery Ventilators, Fans, Oil, Gas & Propane Boilers, Electric Unit Heaters, Hydronic Heating Systems, Water to Water Heat Pumps, Fume Hoods, Louvers, Diffusers, Registers, Grilles and split system heating/cooling units. 
  • Candidate shall have experience with and knowledge of the International Plumbing Code along with state specific code variations. Candidate shall have experience with NFPA 820, NFPA 37 and other associated industry standard codes that are regularly applied.
  • Candidate shall have experience with planning level and detailed cost estimating for HVAC and plumbing components of the design to support our construction cost estimators, including up-front capital, operating and total life cycle costs.
  • Candidate with HVAC system instrumentation and controls experience preferred, including design of the instruments, controls and sequences of operations of commercial HVAC systems and unit processes.  Select instruments, pumps, dampers, temperature sensors, etc. along with the associated electrical, control, and field implementation coordination requirements. Candidate with experience with commercial HVAC control system platforms such as BACNet is preferred  
  • Candidate with experience in Fire Protection Systems is preferred, including either design or coordination with subcontractors.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for new project inquiries, including proposal support, developing scope, schedule and manpower budgets. Manage project to budget, including support project manager with scope and budget revisions as the project progresses.  
  • Develop and evaluate system approaches, concepts and options to determine the best design and engineering solution for each project based upon the project scope and life cycle costs..
  • Design mechanical systems including the preparation of all engineering calculations including load calculations, equipment selection and layout.
  • Develop all approved drawings and specifications.
  • Design to International Plumbing Code and various state specific code variations. Apply ASHRAE and NFPA standards during design.  Work with code authorities as required for approval of plans and specifications, or if code related questions arise. Effectively coordinate with other design and project team members including the architect, lead process engineer, controls engineer, electrical and structural engineers, field personnel, service technicians etc. to ensure mechanical systems are integrated with all trades.

Requirements

What you will need to Succeed!
 

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology.
  • 10+ years of related experience.
  • PE registration required, with multiple states preferred. Candidate must be willing to obtain registration in states where new projects are located as needed.  Candidate with an existing NCEES Council Record and Model Law Engineer designation is preferred.
  • AutoCAD, (MEP, Plant)Revit MEP, Sysque, NavisWorks proficiency a plus.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision or in a team atmosphere.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to consistently set goals and meet deadlines and adapt to flexible responsibilities.
  • Willingness and ability to train and mentor junior staff in HVAC and Plumbing design.
