Hiring Salary/Salary Range: $95,000-$120,000



ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

The mission of the Institute of Applied Engineering is to provide agile, best value engineering products and services to enhance the performance, effectiveness and safety of its customers. The Institute's customers include the Department of Defense, other federal, state and local agencies, and industry. In support of its mission, the Institute performs applied research in alignment with the following core competencies: Autonomous Systems; Human Performance Enhancement; Data Analytics; Cyber and Electromagnetic Domain Security; and Transportation and Energy infrastructure. As a DSO of USF, the Institute is a separately incorporated Florida 501(c)(3) authorized to use USF property, facilities, and personal services for the benefit of USF's research, development, and education mission. As such, the Institute's operations and research staff collaborate with USF faculty and students to develop and deliver these engineering solutions in support of its customers' requirements.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Research Computer /Data Scientist (Engineer III) position requires applied research expertise in some aspect of artificial intelligence,/machine learning/deep learning (e.g. computer vision, natural language processing, etc) and/or data science/analytics as demonstrated through publications or code or completed projects. The position is responsible for assessing user requirements in these areas and for developing supporting sponsored research project proposals, including task orders under the 5-year $85M USSOCOM contract. The position will perform sponsored research and may lead the activities of other researchers and graduate student assistants. The position has the ability to perform independent research aligned with overall sponsor needs. The position will collaborate with USF and other researchers in complimentary disciplines to ensure leading knowledge creation and state-of-the-art methods and technologies are applied to sponsor problems. The position may publish research results in accordance with sponsor publication restrictions, export control requirements, etc. The candidate for the position must be able to hold a national security clearance to perform the duties of the position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs design, development, testing, documentation, and delivery of artificial intelligence and data science-related applied research and advanced technology development projects (coding and associated hardware).  May also publish results in compliance with sponsored contract restrictions.

Leads, guides, mentors, supervises and provides resources to other full-time scientists, engineers, technicians, undergraduate and graduate students participating in the applied research activities.

Develops technical proposals to support award of sponsored contracts and grants related to artificial intelligence- and data science disciplines.  Prepares similar documents for approval to support independent research activities. Solicits inputs and works with IAE contracts, business, program management, IT and security personnel accordingly.

Works with sponsors to identify their problems/needs and articulate potential research efforts to address their requirements.  Collaborates with IAE, USF and other researchers in complimentary disciplines to ensure leading knowledge creation and state-of-the-art methods and technologies are applied to sponsor problems.

Performs administrative tasks required to support performance of applied research and advanced technology development projects, including management of budget and contract deliverables, procurement of research materials and equipment, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:


This position requires a Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physical or Biological Sciences and 5 years of engineering or scientific experience, or a PhD in Engineering, computer Science, mathematics, Physical or Biological Sciences and 2 years of engineering or scientific experience.

PREFERRED:

PhD in Engineering, computer Science, mathematics, Physical or Biological Sciences and 2 years of engineering or scientific experience.

ADDITIONAL INFO: This position is funded by a Department of Defense contract which requires US citizenship
