Job Description

Position Summary

The Department of Physical Sciences is seeking applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position to teach college level algebra and calculus-based physics courses as well as engineering courses.

Primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Teach transferable, non-majors and majors' physics and engineering lectures and laboratories
  • Maintain records, submit grades, and communicate with department and college personnel using established college/department protocol and college's learning management system
  • Develop Syllabi and course materials; evaluate student mastery of skills and competencies required by course outcomes; provide an excellent learning environment; provide student advisement; participate in recruitment activities and program/curriculum development
  • Participate in program/division meetings and activities and serve on department and collegewide committees
  • Assignments may be multi-campus with the possibility of day, evening, and/or weekend classes

  • Appropriate and up-to-date knowledge of the physics, engineering physics, and subject matter
  • A commitment to establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with students, colleagues, leadership, and staff of a diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Experience using technology as an instructional aide where appropriate to enhance student learning
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to maintain an established schedule, including evenings and weekends, and multiple campus teaching assignments that may vary by semester
  • Understanding the role of community college faculty in promoting equity, equality, and inclusion

Additional Responsibilities
  • Support the mission of the college and the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE)
  • Support the expansion of engineering courses, programs, and mission of the college and NSHE system
  • Reducing and aligning remedial sequences within the department
  • Building accountability and benchmarks for institutional assessment and evaluation
  • Prepare and teach courses in physics and engineering to a diverse and multicultural student population based on established Student Learning Outcomes (SLO)
  • Apply a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of the student population and standards of the discipline
  • Participate in college and departmental responsibilities including curriculum review and revision, program review, assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program level, committees, councils, work groups, community service activities, task forces, and professional development
  • Evaluate student progress and provide clear and timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations
  • Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner which does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories
  • Support the institution, school, and department goals through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and unit-level planning
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the department Chair, Dean, and/or Associate Vice President, Vice President, and Vice President of Academic Affairs

Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Physics, Engineering or other related field from a regionally accredited college or university and two years of teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree in Physics, Engineering or other related field from a regionally accredited college or university
  • E.I, E.I.T or P.E. Certification
  • At least one year of experience teaching at a community college
  • Experience with curriculum development
  • Experience teaching online courses
  • Experience teaching and/or working with diverse student and staff populations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of course and classroom management

Starting Salary Range

Initial salary placement is based on educational level and total years of full-time equivalent college teaching experience. A maximum of 10 years of experience will be considered for initial salary placement.
