Apple's Measurement R&D group is recruiting Mechanical Systems Design Engineers with mechanical and automation design experience, strong communication and technical leadership skills.

You will brainstorm, design, develop and characterize metrology equipment used to calibrate and test Apple's new groundbreaking technology and products. Your design work will range from lab scale systems-- understanding and characterizing tool capability at sub-micron mechanical tolerances, to developing automated mass- production measurement tools, where balancing the engineering tradeoffs between precision, costs, lead-time and throughput is critical. With great diversity of the problem space, you will rely on your engineering background to architect the optimal solution for the problem at hand, leaning on the fundamentals of materials science, structural and thermal analysis, machinery design, automation and manufacturing processes.

You will work collaboratively with a creative and diverse team of experienced engineers from all disciplines including instrumentation, core technology, product design and operations teams developing state of the art measurement systems for Apple.

This position requires up to 25% international travel to support equipment design, deployment, and validation.

Key Qualifications

  • You know 3D CAD modeling systems and workflow
  • You can apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5) principles and drafting standards
  • You love stress-strain relationships, static mechanics (determinate and indeterminate systems)
  • You get excited about kinematics and mechanism design
  • Preferred Skills:
  • Product design including opto-mechanical systems and mechanism design,
  • NX SIEMENS CAD experience preferred,
  • FEA (stress analysis) highly desirable, ANSYS preferred
  • Thermal management design and FEA is a plus
  • Plastic part, molded part, and sheet metal parts design experience is highly desirable
  • Metal and plastic materials science, tribology and wear principles highly desirable
  • Project and product management experience strongly preferred

Description

* Product Design
* 3D CAD modeling,
* machined part design,
* plastic parts design,
* sheet metal parts design,
* materials selection and surface finishing,
* static, dynamic and thermal FEA,
* DFM and DFA analysis,
* tolerance analysis,
* 2D fabrication drawing according to ASME Y14.5-2009 and GD&T,
* mechanical Design of PCB and FPCB including
* 3D Modeling with import and export of IDX data (NX SIEMENS).
* 2D drawings of board outlines and fabrication
* design of precision motion system: selection of encoders, motors, and actuators for positioning
of opto-mechanical components,
* Oversee DFMEA and reliability testing
* collaborate with the cross functional team (test engineers, optical engineers, SW engineers, EE
engineers, PM and suppliers) to define the product DFMEA
* collaborate with the cross functional teams to define ad hoc reliability testing and manage third
party vendors to execute a specific set of testing,
* written documentation and summary of test results and data.

* Define OQC and SPC plan for manufacturing of parts and components
* QC measurements according to 2D drawings and product specification,
* selection of gages and gages GRR,
* implementation and review of control charts and monitoring of suppliers process capabilities.

* Documentation
* written summary of system integration and components specification (ERS)
* summary of test data, summary of design reviews, lessons learned and best practices reports,
DFM and Design summaries,
* update revisions of CAD models and 2D drawings.

* Project management
-Drive suppliers to design, develop, prototype, and characterize instruments and instrument
systems,
-Collaborate with suppliers to complete failure analysis and continuous improvements in product
performance and manufacturability.

Education & Experience

BS/MS (Mechanical / Aerospace / Mechatronics)
