Integration & Automation Engineer

Are you interested in developing products to advance the protection, automation and control of the Power System?  Would you like to collaborate with people from multiple disciplines? Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks an Integration & Automation Engineer to work in our Research and Development Protection Systems department. In this role you will ensure that protective relays integrate and communicate with other devices and computers to monitor and control the electric grid. You will collaborate with software, hardware, and power engineers to develop automation solutions to assist in advancing the power system technology, furthering SELs mission of making electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Maintain advanced technical knowledge and skills to contribute to the development and enhancement of integration and automation features in SEL products.

2. Define, develop and analyze product specifications, functional tests, and system validation processes.

3. Diagnose customer reported problems with integration and communication features and document issues for developers.

4. Provide technical and market analysis to evaluate proposed products or enhancements.

5. Mentor Associate Engineers and Technicians.

6. Follow and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operation and World Class Manufacturing principles. 7. Understand. Create. Simplify. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent

Demonstrated experience with serial, Ethernet, and multiple communication protocols and their application in an electrical power system environment

2+ years of experience in setup and configuration of a broad range of network devices and interfaces

2+ years of experience at an electric utility, industrial plant, or engineering firm

Ability to work effectively and professionally with internal and external customers

Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
Background check results satisfactory to SEL
Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications

Typically 2+ years of experience in electric power SCADA or EMS practices

Experience contributing to product development teams

Working knowledge of the following:

  • SEL products and protocols
  • Electric utility telecommunications
  • IEC 61850, IEC 60870-103, -101, -104, DNP3, Modbus, PRP, IEEE 1588
  • 3-phase and electric power systems
  • Electric utility protection practices
  • NERC-CIP compliance requirements
  • Industrial controls and PLCs
