Intern - Autonomous Sensing and Control R&D Undergraduate Year Round

We are seeking a year-round student intern to assist staff members in developing and implementing algorithms for on-board real-time processing of signals (acoustic, vibration, seismic, electro-magnetic, optical/image, radar, lidar, etc.) to identify, classify and/or cluster the types of the signal sources. Proficiency in machine learning is essential. Knowledge of system dynamics and controls is preferred.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Write/generate computational codes for real-time embedded sensing systems or controllers
+ Develop new algorithms, concepts, analysis, or technology
+ Create and run computer simulations
+ Analyze options
+ Design and build sensor systems or controllers
+ Test and/or collect field data
+ Analyze experimental data
+ Write and present reports


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Academic senior or junior undergraduate studying Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, Systems Engineering, or a related field of study
+ Proficiency with MATLAB
+ Proficiency in at least one of the following: C, C++, C#, Python, or a closely related language
+ Completed coursework or practical experience with machine learning
+ Proficiency in using statistics concepts and formulae
+ Interest in digital signal/image processing, acoustics, seismic vibration, and/or magnetisms


+ Good written and verbal communication skills
+ Excellent academic standing
+ Desire to pursue education in engineering beyond undergraduate studies
+ Willingness to work outdoors, sometimes in harsh environmental conditions, alongside engineers in field tests and data collections
+ Knowledge of systems dynamics and controls
+ Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Department Description:

The Exploratory Real-Time Systems Department develops and fields autonomous sensing systems for defense and other government customers that are based on advanced signal processing, communications and embedded computing techniques. We perform engineering, systems development and field implementations for a variety of national security applications integrating expertise from across the Laboratories to develop systems that provide situational awareness, target characterization, and virtual presence missions. A major part of this work is the development and implementation of advanced detection, classification and localization algorithms for use in distributed arrays of collaborating, networked sensors.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
