We are seeking an Intern Year Round - R&D Grad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Solve the diverse set of technical problems associated with electromagnetic coupling into systems and ultimately predicting the corresponding electrical circuit response
+ Work with a team of experts on advancing Sandia's experimental capabilities and analysis tools associated with understanding electromagnetic system effects
+ Collaborate with experienced researchers in electromagnetic analysis performing and applying fundamental research in areas such as (but not limited to):

- Asymptotic methods for electromagnetics
- Computational electromagnetics
- Metamaterials and nanophotonics
- Electromagnetic susceptibility

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field including graduate electromagnetic coursework

Desired:

+ Ph.D. candidate in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field with a focus in electromagnetics
+ Good interpersonal, communication, oral presentation, and documentation skills
+ High level of academic success
+ Publications, presentations, or projects demonstrating experience with developing or using numerical simulations or theoretical analysis to better understand electromagnetic phenomena
+ Experience in one or more of the following:

- Using commercial EM modeling tools (e.g. HFSS, CST Microwave Studio, COMSOL, FEKO, etc.), circuit modeling tools (Mentor Graphics, Cadence)
- Developing specialized numerical analysis tools using C++, FORTRAN, Matlab, Python, etc.
- Code development for modern computing architectures including instruction-level, data, and task parallelism (Cuda/ROCm, OpenMP, MPI, etc.)
- Performing numerical simulations on high performance computing platforms (basic Linux commands, batch submission, shell scripting, etc.)
- Preparing geometrical models for numerical simulation, i.e. experience in geometrical defeaturing and meshing
- Data processing, post-processing, visualization

Department Description:

The Electromagnetic Theory & Simulation department develops analytical and numerical electromagnetic models, develops state-of-the-art computational electromagnetic codes, and conducts advanced electromagnetic analyses for use across a broad spectrum of electromagnetic environments. Computational modeling is performed using Sandia-developed simulation tools on world class high-performance computing clusters and custom-made simulation servers. Capabilities developed in the Electromagnetic Theory & Simulation department support long-term research in electromagnetics, and also enable the near-term delivery of toolsets and high-fidelity analysis that can be used for addressing the wide array of Sandia mission needs. For example, high-fidelity computational simulation and analysis are provided to evaluate the electrical performance of complex systems (including subsystems and components) when subjected to various electromagnetic environments, including lightning, electromagnetic pulse (EMP), electromagnetic radiation (EMR), and electrostatic discharge (ESD), toward Sandias Nuclear Deterrence mission.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
