We are seeking an Intern Summer - R&D Grad to support projects in MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) and related microsystem technologies. Our current interests range from engineering development of traditional MEMS sensors and actuators for national security applications to exploratory research in state-of-the-art in microsystem science and technology.

For this posting, we are seeking Graduate Summer Interns who want to gain skills relevant to a career in research and development, especially in one or more of the following:

+ Traditional MEMS sensors and embedded systems, such as, inertial measurement units
+ Piezoelectric micro-devices, including resonators for RF filters and oscillators, sensors, and ultrasonic transducers
+ Micro opto-mechanical systems, such as, optical ring resonators, Mach-Zehnder modulators, diffraction gratings, and photonic crystals
+ Magnetic microsystems and components, such as, sensors, motors, and inductors
+ Additive manufacturing for microelectronics, e.g., chip interposers and passive electronic components

By working in an R&D lab, some of the skills you might learn include setting up and conducting experiments, taking data with state-of-the-art instruments, inspections using microscopes, and maintaining a safe, efficient laboratory. You will also be exposed to the design, simulation, and fabrication of microsystems at Sandias MESA fabrication facilities.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Assist with laboratory maintenance and experiment setup
+ Support data acquisition
+ Program computers to control data acquisition, manage data, analyze data, etc.
+ Work with engineers to solve problems

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position.

Desired:

+ Laboratory experimentation, data acquisition, computer or microcontroller programming
+ Ability to think clearly and creatively
+ Eagerness to learn new technical material, possibly outside your major
+ Eagerness to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team environment
+ Strong initiative
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills
+ Strong interest in pursuing a career in science or engineering (especially MEMS), demonstrated by choice of academic major and/or coursework

Department Description:

You will be part of the MEMS Technology Department (http://mems.sandia.gov/). We conduct research and development for advanced micro-electromechanical systems that push the technology envelope for national security applications. Our broad R&D portfolio includes traditional MEMS sensors and actuators (e.g., inertial sensors and switches), piezoelectric devices (e.g., ultrasonic transducers), RF/acoustic devices (e.g., RF filters), opto/acoustic devices (e.g., optical modulators), magnetic and photovoltaic devices, and emerging technologies. We also develop and maintain a comprehensive set of MEMS fabrication processes in Sandia's MESA Silicon and Micro Fabs, where we build MEMS with traditional bulk and surface micromachining, piezoelectric films, damascene and electrodeposited metals, through substrate vias, wafer bonding, and other semiconductor fab processes. MEMS is an interdisciplinary field. So our team includes a great diversity of technical backgrounds, including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, nuclear engineering, and even civil engineering. We highly value technical competence and entrepreneurial spirit. We welcome diversity of all kinds and strive for an inclusive environment.
