Job Description

The Laboratory Chief Engineer is a leadership position serving on the ASL Leadership Council.

Job Duties

  • Maintain a high level of involvement in ASL Division sponsored research programs
  • Serve as technical advisor to the Lab Director on ongoing programs and initiatives
  • Maintain understanding of labs technical thrusts
  • Represent Labs projects technically to Lab management and in briefings to potential sponsors
  • Support Lab strategic planning in alignment with GT/GTRI Strategic Plans
  • Advise Lab management on technical investment areas
  • Identify inter-lab and intra-lab overlapping areas and facilitate connections between individuals and teams
  • Serve as technical advisor for program development
  • Support technical discussions with potential sponsors
  • Assist in matching technical capabilities with potential sponsors needs
  • Remain engaged across GTRI with other lab Chief Engineers to foster collaboration
  • Support the Labs Chief Scientist
  • Support Chief Scientist in managing Lab's IRAD program
  • Serve as back-up for Chief Scientist in GTRI-level meetings and discussions
  • Serve as a research faculty advocate
  • Assess, manage and update the tools, technologies and processes the Lab needs to execute sponsored research
  • Seek to improve intra-lab communication and information sharing
  • Work with Lab Director and Division Management to ensure professional development of research staff
  • Organize and plan ASL Academics
  • Encourage conference participation by engineers for the benefit of engineers and to increase presence in important professional communities
  • Encourage participation and advancement in technical societies
  • Identify strong technical performers from within the Lab and ensure they are on a successful path
  • Develop and maintain an ASL technology modernization plan

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate

  • A Masters degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field and four (4) years of relevant full time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate

  • A Masters degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • At least ten years of proven leadership of high-functioning teams of engineers
  • Subject matter expertise in at least one of the following areas:
    • Army Air and Missile Defense
    • Army Aviation

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Ability to obtain Secret Clearance upon hire
