Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have multiple openings for experienced Laser Engineers to support national security or defense missions. You will research, design, develop, analyze, model, test, and field advanced laser technology and systems in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF & PS) Directorate. Areas of specialization may include: solid state laser physics and technology, high energy pulsed or continuous wave (CW) laser systems, ranging from femtosecond to microsecond and energies from Megajoules to kilojoules. This position involves the technical development of short pulse generation and amplification, temporal pulse stretching and compression, physics and characteristics of laser amplification, nonlinear effects; sensors and instrumentation; systems engineering; laser performance modeling; and documentation. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Research, define requirements (may include systems), design, and develop high average power, CW, or pulsed laser systems and technologies incorporating essential new physics to support evolving missions while using engineering best practices to assess and mitigate risk as appropriate.
- Conduct experiments as part of mid-to-large sized teams in the fields of short pulse, high power, and energy laser physics. Ability to work independently and under minimal direction.
- Execute and interpret advanced laser experiments that test new physics and modeling capability in collaboration with laboratory scientists and engineers.
- Define and prioritize tasks and goals to ensure that programmatic needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Construct, run, and improve laser performance models utilizing complex analytical code and numerical simulations (may involve integration of system models depending on specific projects assigned).
- Apply advanced knowledge in identified areas, interacting with mid-level and senior management. Perform other duties as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the SES.4 Level
- Manage the development of requirements, validation and verification plans, commissioning test procedures, while directing technical tests and influencing direction of a broad team of design hardware engineers, systems engineers, and analysts.
- Participate on relevant teams that conduct laser design, fabrication, and testing acting as a subject matter expert.
- Develop highly complex research and development proposals.

- Masters degree in Engineering, Physics, or Optics, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge in solid state laser physics and technology, high energy pulsed or CW laser systems, ranging from femtosecond to microsecond and energies from millijoules to Megajoules and nonlinear optics as applied to laser development and operations.
- Significant experience designing, building, testing, modeling, and optimizing performance of short pulse and/or high energy laser systems.
- Significant experience working independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team, working to advance research and development activities.
- Successful record of accomplishment in scientific research and development.
- Advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, decision making, and analytical skills necessary to independently anticipate, analyze, advise, and recommend, appropriate actions and potential solutions to complex issues.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills necessary to author technical and scientific reports and publications, deliver scientific presentations, and interact with a diverse group.

In Addition, at the SES.4 Level
- Substantial experience and highly advanced problem solving in the areas of high average power pulsed and/or CW lasers design, development, and fielding, with the ability to anticipate, identify, and implement appropriate actions and solutions under consultative direction.
- Substantial experience on mid-to-large scale projects including working with all levels of the organization, including customers, users and other peer groups.
- Substantial track record of publications in referred journals as the primary author.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or relatable field.
- Knowledge in Joule-class short pulse lasers and amplifiers and/or high average power solid state laser technology, high energy system efficacy and its dependence on laser system design, beam control design, beam direction design, control system design, considerations for system safety and ruggedness, etc., as well as detailed knowledge of system and subsystem activation, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Experience leading systems engineering/ architecture for programs involving the field testing or operation assessment of high energy weapons systems with a domain expertise in government development and procurement programs, capabilities, etc.
- Experience writing proposals and authoring technical volumes.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
