Lead Materials Engineer for Metrology, Evaluation, and Qualification

We have an opening for a Lead Materials Engineer for Metrology, Evaluation, and Qualification in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) of the Engineering Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). This position will be matrixed to the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Program in support of the Polymer Enclave. This individual will provide metrology, characterization, and evaluation leadership while advancing qualification and certification methods that leverage a strong understanding of core materials science and engineering principles. The Lead Materials Engineer for Metrology, Evaluation, and Qualification will be responsible for developing, planning, executing, and documenting engineering design experiments for material and component metrology, evaluation, analysis, and qualification by leading a multidisciplinary sub-team within the Polymer Enclave. The Lead Materials Engineer for Metrology, Evaluation, and Qualification will build forge partnerships across National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) sites, including Production Agencies, with the goal of advancing manufacturing science to accelerate design and production development for current and future stockpile modernization efforts. The selected individual will need to work across WCI, LLNL Directorates, and the National Security Enterprise (NSE) to develop strategies to advance qualification and certification methods.


In this role you will:

  • Gather, create, and understand additive manufacturing engineering requirements and interpret technical design drawings for components to gain strong understanding of manufacturing and design requirements.
  • Leverage team members' skills to successfully complete complex projects, by ensuring excellence in execution of technical work in the program.
  • Provide technical expertise in dynamic and quasi-static mechanical, thermal and thermomechanical design experiments, and post-processing analysis.
  • Leverage analysis to support or guide design, testing, modification, and optimization of mechanical components and systems.
  • Independently develop and implement analysis workflow and quality practices, including workflow optimization, process standardization, and configuration management of analysis files and software.
  • Work to improve processes and implement changes to increase efficiencies within the organization.
  • Support programmatic deliverables with occasional travel, as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties at the SES.3 Level

  • Provide advanced engineering and project leadership to team members in the execution of work scope with a focus on defining, developing, and executing complex experiments which involve hardware design, fabrication, testing, qualification, and deployment.
  • Lead and/or provide guidance and technical direction to multidisciplinary project teams in a growing, dynamic environment.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Materials, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering or related field or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge needed to create, understand, and interpret technical drawings and engineering analyses.
  • Experience with setup and operation of mechanical, rheological, thermal, and chemical analytical instrumentation including how to run associated software programs.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in determining optimal techniques, methods, and evaluation criteria for answering engineering questions.
  • Ability to lead, manage, and mentor team members.
  • Ability to work in an environment requiring attention to detail, coupled with a high level of multitasking and prioritization required to meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability and flexibility to reprioritize and change programmatic direction depending on emergent requests.

Additional Qualifications at the SES.3 Level

  • Ability to stand up a metrology program in accordance with federal level contractual requirements in the implementation for program and enterprise compliance.
  • Advanced knowledge of the metrology, evaluation, and qualification processes involved in hardware design, fabrication, testing, qualification, and deployment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on developing relationships and building long-term collaborations with internal members of the team and/or external sponsors.
  • Experience participating in formal and informal design reviews.
  • Ability to devise solutions for complex technical requirements, to take initiative to develop innovative solutions for successful project execution.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a multidisciplinary research team environment to present and explain technical information and provide advice and guidance to team members and management.

Desired Qualification:

  • Broad knowledge of LLNL programmatic needs and applications and strong knowledge of WCI work scope and/or programmatic elements.
