Brief: Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), an MIT spinout pursuing the fastest, surest way to clean, limitless fusion energy, is looking for a mechanical systems engineer with at least 10 years of experience leading teams through the design and commissioning of complex, integrated systems in extreme environments.

CFS’ mission is to enable world-wide clean energy for everyone, creating a sustainable environment for current and future generations. We’ve created a credible path to an operating fusion power plant in 15 years which leverages our novel collaboration with MIT and funding from strategic and financial investors who share our vision. This begins by developing a new class of high-field superconducting magnets that will enable the SPARC tokamak to demonstrate net energy from fusion for the first time. To execute this plan, we are now looking to add talented people to the team who:

Lead Mechanical Systems Engineer

The SPARC tokamak will have a variety of mechanical engineering challenges, including structures under extreme conditions (cryogenics down to liquid helium temperatures and plasma-facing components exposed to extreme plasma heat fluxes), superconducting magnets and current leads, vacuum vessels, and general mechanical support systems (air, water, HVAC), all in a tritium and nuclear environment. The Lead Mechanical Systems Engineer will:

  • work within a multi-disciplinary team of physicists and engineers as part of collaborative sponsored research projects at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC);
  • lead the engineering design team of mechanical systems for the SPARC tokamak, including all structural systems (tokamak core and internal components, seismic loads, remote maintenance), cryogenics, support systems, as well as tokamak fueling and pumping;
  • ensure the design is completed in compliance with the Code of Record and established requirements;
  • maintain interfaces with other engineering subsystems; and
  • report on and be accountable for project progress to the head of SPARC device design.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • designed, built, and operated a variety of plant-scale mechanical systems that span multiple, integrated subsystems;
  • led teams of mechanical engineers through projects from conceptual design to completion under a QA program;
  • familiarity with engineering systems at the extreme environments of a tokamak under nuclear loading;
  • an exceptional safety record and attention to detail;
  • at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field (e.g., mechanical);
  • a minimum of 10 years of experience in leading design teams;
  • familiarity in applying ASME, ACI, ASTM, and other mechanical standards to design solutions;
  • skill in modern computational design and engineering tools;
  • the skill to clearly express and critique ideas;
  • a value for elegance and simplicity over complexity;
  • a drive towards commercially-viable solutions; and
  • the desire to work in a fast-paced, startup R&D environment.
