The Institute for Defense and Energy Systems at the University of Missouri - Kansas City seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Lead Radio Frequency Engineer.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate mature experience & knowledge in detailed design and analysis of high-power switching technologies and pulse forming networks. Experience in power electronics, capacitor chargers, electromagnetics, microelectronics, and thermal design is a plus. Specifically, we are looking for a Senior Level Pulse Power Engineer with skills and interest in pulsed power systems and drivers, RF systems, power electronics, and high-speed diagnostics. This position requires a solid foundation in electromagnetic and power electronics theory and application. Hands-on experience with hardware is vital and required.


  • Directing students and staff with the design, integration, and testing of the RF generation, transmission, control, and antenna components
  • Assisting with the modeling and simulation of the RF system
  • Assisting with the packaging and mounting of the RF components/system
  • Assisting with the development and execute of intermediate, component-level, and full system testing
  • Communication, control, and data acquisition systems
  • Component/system electrical design (hardware, firmware, and software)
  • Modeling, simulation, and visualization of electrical systems and phenomenon
  • Power systems and electronics
  • Pulsed power and directed energy
  • Experience with circuit modeling, data processing, and system integration is required
  • Experience in writing technical reports and delivering technical briefings is required; proposal writing experience is desirable
  • Must work and communicate well with others and be capable of multitasking and managing time effectively



  • Masters of Science or greater in Physics or Electrical Engineering (a BS may be considered based on experience level)
  • Five (5) years of experience in design, development and implementation of analog and digital hardware and software related to RF systems
  • Three (3) years of experience in the areas of signal generation, high powered RF systems, digital signal processing, bench and/or system level testing of electronics components for pulsed power, RF, and Radar
  • Experience in one or more of the following: electrical design, modeling & simulation, systems integration
  • Experience working effectively in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment
  • Experience using basic data acquisition equipment including multimeters, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, voltage probes, current probes, and spectrum analyzers
  • Experience with RF system and platform integration is highly desirable
  • Extensive experience with MS Office products
  • Experience with Visio and/or SolidWorks is a plus
  • Experience with Antenna and propagation modeling software programs and/or MATLAB and/or Simulink desired
  • Experience with VNA and spectrum analyzers highly desired
  • Ability to understand a variety of technical disciplines
  • Critical thinking, synthesis, and problem-solving skills
  • Must work and communicate well with others and be capable of multitasking and managing time effectively to meet project objectives
  • Ability to prioritize, lead, and complete projects within appropriate scope and time frame
