Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform theory and simulation research relevant to Magnetic Fusion Energy Science. You will develop new modeling capabilities and the application of those capabilities addressing high priority problems in boundary and edge physics in tokamak plasmas. The work will be performed within the LLNL Fusion Energy Sciences Programs Theory and Simulations group in the Physics Division.Essential Duties
- Contribute to numerical simulations of pedestal plasmas and their MHD stability in long pulse tokamak plasma scenarios in no ELM/small ELM regimes, of the associated power and particle fluxes to plasma facing components- Design and implement simulation techniques to advance existing tokamak codes for multiscale edge-physics modeling- Conduct fundamental research in the development of tokamak edge-physics modeling- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.- Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications- Recent PhD in Physics or a related discipline.- Experience developing fluid and/or kinetic plasma modeling codes.- Experience applying such codes (along with advanced plasma theory) to magnetic fusion plasmas with connection to experiments, including familiarity with experimental device capabilities, diagnostics, and interpretation of data.- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.- Initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.Desired Qualifications- Proficiency in C++, MPI, OpenMP, Python, and/or other scripting language programming.- Deep knowledge on plasma edge physics, turbulence and transport theory, Gyro-Landau-Fluid models, large scale MHD simulations, and moment-based neutral and impurity models.- Familiarity with advanced numerical methods for discretization, efficient code-coupling techniques for multi-physics, and/or preconditioners for implicit methods.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: None required.

However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check. (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
