What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a dedicated R&D Manager to lead the Innovative Sensors and Systems Department (6774) within the Weaponization and Mission Science Group (6770)! The department conducts R&D in support of the Center 6700 core missions of space and ground based remote sensing. The Innovative Sensors and Systems Department spans the full system realization cycle of conceptualizing, designing, building, and testing prototype sensor systems that span the national security mission space. Our group investigates mission needs in optical and RF modalities and develops novel concepts for addressing critical gaps in capability. The competencies in the department span Optical, Mechanical/Robotics, RF, and Embedded Systems.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Establish customer relationships and develop program proposals.

+ Assure execution of deliverables within negotiated budgets and schedules.

+ Identify and provide solutions to fundamental gaps that yield advanced R&D opportunities.

+ Develop and strengthen partnerships with peer managers, internal and external partners, and broader Laboratories to advance work across the research, development, and application spectrum.

+ Build and maintain trusted partnerships across DoD and Intelligence Community agencies.

+ Lead staff in the development of new concepts and maturation of new technology solutions.

+ Collaborate with key partners in setting strategic direction for the organizations and ensure success on programmatic responsibilities.

+ Champion a culture that promotes safety and security, as well as a diverse and inclusive work environment.

+ Set the direction of the department and pursue new opportunities.

+ Seek strategic investments to maintain and further the core capabilities of the department.

+ Ensure a continued focus on technical excellence through ambitious work assignments for staff and peer reviews.

+ Manage staff development, including hiring, onboarding, professional development, and performance management.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

+ Master’s degree in Physics, Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences or Electrical Engineering plus five (5) years' of technical leadership experience or a PhD in a related field plus one (1) year of technical leadership experience

+ Experience establishing and successfully implementing Strategic Partnership Projects (SPP) or Strategic Intelligence Partnership Projects (SIPP)

+ Ability to lead a team of advanced degreed personnel in a technical environment

+ Active DOE Q clearance

+ Ability to obtain an SCI security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Experience developing and managing projects, to include leading multi-disciplinary teams with varied strengths

+ Record of successful delivery of complex projects and programs

+ Experience with remote sensing systems

+ Demonstrated interpersonal skills in developing trust-based relationships among peers, staff, management, and customers.

+ Demonstrated experience in cultivating relationships with partner and customer organizations

+ Experience with Sandia, DoD, and Intelligence Community acquisition processes

+ Good oral and written communication skills

Technical Experience in one or more of the following:

+ Optical System Design

+ Optical Performance Assessment

+ System Integration

+ Embedded Electronics Design

About Our Team:

The Mission Science Group (6770), within the Monitoring Systems & Technology Center (6700), focuses on both Signature Physics and Remote Sensing Technology applications. The group advances Treaty Monitoring and National Security missions by demonstrating a comprehensive scientific understanding of source term signature generation as well as detection and characterization techniques. The research within the group spans several diverse technical areas including nuclear detonation phenomenology, system conceptual design, embedded electronics and processing, spectral & temporal data analysis, and exploitation. The group possesses all proficiencies vital to assess complex remote sensing problems and to formulate innovative solutions that are advised by a scientific understanding of mission science and phenomenology.

Security Clearance:
