Job Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute's Undersea System Program Office (USPO) is seeking a dynamic, disciplined, and analytical candidate with extensive US Navy operational experience to augment our current team of talented engineers in San Diego, CA. The successful candidate will provide a crucial balance of advanced research capabilities and extensive operational experience to help us address some of the most challenging undersea-related initiatives promulgated by the US Navy, Joint Forces, and other related Department of Defense (DoD) entities.

The ideal candidate will have twenty or more years experience as a commissioned officer with the US Navy or technical leader at a related DoD entity. Candidates will work multiple projects simultaneously in an environment that leverages deep knowledge of the undersea physical and operational environment. The candidate will have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop creative solutions to complex technical and operational problems, typically culminating in regular programmatic and technical interactions with DoD sponsors.

Job Duties

  • Apply undersea domain expertise to support the analysis, design, development, testing, integration, and deployment of new concepts and capabilities
  • Participate as a subject matter expert (SME) on projects and sponsor-hosted events addressing undersea challenges
  • Utilize operational experience to improve the relevance and impact of ongoing and future applied research programs
  • Collaborate with fellow engineers within your assigned team and across GTRI to research, investigate, and experiment with advanced concepts and technologies
  • Conduct theoretical analysis, model physical and operational undersea concepts, and participate in the development of relevant simulations, as required to satisfy project requirements
  • Document advanced concepts in a manner that can be understood by internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop internal and external communications (presentations, status reports, guidance documents, requirements, etc.)
  • Participate in business development activities supporting the advancement of current initiatives and development of new opportunities
  • Provide domain knowledge to conduct mission-related analysis and research
  • Participate in and lead, as appropriate, laboratory and field experiments/demonstrations

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Master's or Doctoral degree program relevant to this position will be considered. Candidate must have a graduation date of no later than August 2020
  • Submarine warfare qualified or extensive (20+ years) experience in submarine, undersea surveillance, or related fields including a detailed understanding of undersea asset employment
  • Maritime operational command experience including planning, executing and monitoring naval missions
  • Possess knowledge in analyzing and developing concepts and capabilities related to policy, doctrine, tactics, and other disciplines related to the employment of undersea forces
  • Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams exhibiting technical and naval operational responsibilities
  • Excellent communicator with an ability to provide informative briefings to outside organizations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Oceanography, or a related field of study
  • Expert-level knowledge of anti-submarine warfare (ASW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), littoral, and related mission sets
  • Mastery of surveillance and command and control (C2) concepts and operations (CONOPS), multi-domain operations, threat analysis, operational scenario development, and campaign / theater-level modeling and simulation (M&S)
  • Current DoD security clearance at TS/SCI level

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
