The Institute for Software Research (ISR) in the School of Computer Science (SCS) at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for two teaching-track positions. This is a career-oriented, renewable appointment with an initial appointment of three years. Initial appointments would be at the Assistant or Associate rank commensurate with the experience of the candidate, with the possibility of promotion to higher ranks. These ranks are not tenured, but they do provide substantial opportunities for professional growth and long-term contributions to Software Engineering education at Carnegie Mellon University.

This position will be primarily assigned to support the Masters of Software Engineering (MSE) program, which was established in 1989 and which continues to train tomorrow’s leaders in designing, developing and managing Internet-scale, mobile and embedded software-intensive systems. There will also be opportunities to engage in teaching at the undergraduate level. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in cyber-physical systems, embedded systems, Internet of Things, and mobile applications, as well as those with interest in the online delivery of educational content. However, applicants with expertise in all areas of software engineering technologies and methods will be considered. Teaching track faculty in the MSE program are encouraged to innovate in teaching practice, to publish on pedagogy and to develop strong industry and government relations that advance our educational priorities. Industry experience is highly valued.

ISR is an academic department dedicated to the study of software engineering and societal computing, with two Ph.D. programs and approximately forty faculty members. ISR is one of seven departments within SCS, which has over 200 tenure-track, research, and teaching faculty with expertise spanning traditional computer science, human-computer interaction, language technology, machine learning, computational biology, software engineering, and robotics. SCS offers a highly collaborative and uniquely interdisciplinary environment that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship in both teaching and research.

Ideal candidates for the position should have an M.S. or Ph.D., preferably in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, an aptitude for teaching and engaging students, and several years of professional experience in software engineering. The candidate should have familiarity with a number of roles in the software engineering field, such as team lead, developer, manager, tester, and quality assurance manager. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who have a demonstrated track record in mentoring and nurturing female and under-represented minority students.
