We have openings for Materials and Chemical Staff Scientists to conduct a full range of moderate to complex research in the areas of tritium programs within Superblock Facilities. You will actively participate with and be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for conducting and supporting research in support of nuclear materials programs and other national security programs. This position is in the Plutonium Science and Technology group within the Materials Science Division.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Conduct moderately complex to complex research in the area of tritium separation and purification, material and chemical analyses, and chemical process design and testing.
- Actively participate in the focused research programs centered on tritium/hydrogen and/or nuclear materials programs, including handling and analysis of hazardous materials such as tritium, beryllium, plutonium, and uranium.
- Actively participate in the development of methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to design, build, maintain, or modify specialized equipment/ instrumentation in nuclear facilities.
- Prepare written analyses, progress reports, verbal briefings, and other products that capture and communicate research results and present research findings to sponsors and consumers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 level
- Evaluate, identify, and develop solutions to highly unusual, unique, and complex issues related to tritium operations and/or nuclear materials.
- Conduct advanced research in hydrogen isotopes and/or nuclear material research and serve as the technical contact.
- Mentor other scientists/engineers as necessary.

- BS in chemical engineering, materials science, nuclear engineering, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Laboratory experience including chemical and material processing and analysis.
- Broad experience identifying, defining, and multi-disciplinary problems in a timely, cost effective manner and experience in moderately complex to complex experimental design, techniques and execution.
- Ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a collaborative research and development environment.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- MS in chemical engineering, materials science, nuclear engineering, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience and knowledge in designing and executing research in tritium/hydrogenor related chemistry or materials science experience with the ability to lead independent work on complex technical tasks, and to exert significant influence on technical objectives, provide in-depth analyses, and develop unique technical solutions.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of the limitations and sources of uncertainties in analytical measurements, and a comprehensive knowledge of laboratory operations or chemical/material process development with the ability to meet schedule deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of and experience working with hydrogen isotopes in radiation environment.
- Experience in automated control and analysis systems for high throughput experiments.
- Collaborative work habits (leverage available expertise) and inclusive research approach (work with diverse group of scientists and engineers).

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
