We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform research and development of matrix-free linear solvers and preconditioners for high-order finite element discretizations. You will investigate the mathematical properties of multigrid solvers for high-order finite elements with particular attention to the regime where computation is very cheap compared to data movement. You will implement linear solvers and preconditioners in a matrix-free setting that is tailored to emerging high-concurrency software architectures, including GPUs. This position is in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division within the Computing Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Research and develop innovative solvers for high-order finite element operators without matrix assembly.
- Develop efficient implementations of solvers suitable for emerging hardware architectures.
- Collaborate with application teams to provide matrix-free solvers for diffusion applications.
- Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and participate in conferences and workshops.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or a related field.
- Knowledge of high-order finite element methods for PDE discretizations.
- Knowledge of linear solvers and preconditioning methods, including geometric and algebraic multigrid methods.
- Ability to work with application scientists and software development teams.
- Ability to conduct high-quality independent research and to develop implementations to evaluate the results.
- Experience developing complex C++ software in a Linux environment.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact in a clear and concise manner, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with the MFEM finite element library and/or the Hypre solvers library.
- Experience with GPU programming.

Security Clearance: None required.

However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. Note: This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
