The Role

The Principal Engineer role is generally the conceptualization and development of complex mechanical, electromechanical and electrical equipment and systems that will become the new products of Umbra Cuscinetti, Inc. Depending upon company staffing and need, this engineer may also be responsible for conceptualization and development of complex mechanical and electrical equipment that will be used for test and production of new and existing UCI products. The incumbent independently evaluates, selects, adapts, and applies appropriate engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to conduct projects. In consultation with the VP of Engineering and the Director of Product Development, this engineer devises approaches to enhance company technical capabilities, solve the most challenging technical problems and plans and coordinates the work of others on major engineering projects. As assigned by management, the Principal Engineer mentors and coaches less senior mechanical engineers and technicians in their technical assignments and and skill development. The incumbent receives guidance on general assignment objectives and critical issues, but independently makes un-reviewed decisions on engineering matters


Specific Responsibilities May Include

  • Develop requirements for new products through consultation with customers and sales personnel
  • Synthesize potential mechanical, electromechanical and electrical solutions and down select, often through extensive trade studies and analysis
  • Contribute cost data and technical materials to successful proposals that establish the baseline for contract and change negotiations
  • Define product architecture, design detailed layouts, select technologies and components, prepare drawings and component specifications, complete analyses, and prepare technical reports that will satisfy all program and regulatory agency requirements and ensure product viability and integrity
  • Participate effectively as a key member of a team representing all company functions to ensure successful completion of design, procurement, fabrication, first product build, development test, and transition to production activities to meet program objectives
  • In cooperation with assigned product and manufacturing engineer(s), provide technical and production support and feature enhancement of existing products
  • Represent Umbra in a manner consistent with its core values
  • Consult with management regarding the evolution of the mechanical, electromechanical and electrical engineering function, including skill development, recruitment activities, and identification and coordination of external contract support
  • Provide input for the mechanical, electromechanical and electrical production function to establish and maintain proper practices, tools, and skills for efficient, high quality production of UCI products
  • Individually remain current in the mechanical, electromechanical and electrical state of the art and oversee strategic technology development activities and implementations as assigned
  • Provide Subject Matter Expertise (SME) in one or more of the following disciplines:Stress, fatigue and vibration analysis and test
  • Electromechanical design and analysis including DC Motors and motor-powered electromechanical actuators (EMAs)
  • System design and analysis including controls, EMA-based systems and higher-level systems where UCI products are used
  • Innovative manufacturing techniques and methods that provide future differentiation and competitive benefit for UCI
  • Gear design and analysis including transmissions, actuation, and gear types including helical, bevel, planetary and worm
  • Receive guidance from company leadership, meet deadlines, follow work rules, safety practices, and company work procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Principal: Masters Degree (M.S) in Engineering
  • 15 or more years of work experience
  • Background in engineering analyses such as stress, strength and vibration, kinematics, performance of geared and electromechanical equipment, dynamic performance analysis
  • Demonstrated proficiency in application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per ANSI Y-14.5
  • Must be proficient in CAD and PDM software such as SolidWorks or NX and Teamcenter
  • Proficiency in Mathcad and Matlab / Simulink
  • Proficiency in CAE software such as ANSYS, Solidworks Simulation, electromechanical and mixed-discipline system simulation tools

Work Environment

This position is in a standard manufacturing environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical equipment. The noise levels in the work environment are frequently moderate to loud. Safety glasses and safety shoes are required throughout the shop floor and hearing protection is recommended, with the exception of certain manufacturing areas, which require hearing protection at all times


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb/balance/kneel, reach, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds, with assistance. The employee may be required to work in loud environments. Employee may be required to wear personal protective equipment for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, focus adjustment
