We are seeking a R&D Mechanical Engineer for the Handling Gear (H-Gear) Engineering Group (8447), to perform a wide range of mechanical engineering activities in support of the design, development, testing, fielding, and sustainment of both Handling and Test Gear for DoD use in the field.

The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team environment with various partners across the weapons complex to explore and develop H-Gear solutions that balance performance, cost, manufacturability, complexity, etc. The engineer will work on one or more projects, the size and duration of which typically range from individual assignments to ten-person efforts, and from one to five years in duration. Staff members in this and similar positions have opportunities to advance their technical and subject matter expertise, and to fill roles that require increasing levels of technical responsibility, project management skills, and interfacing with customers, sponsors, line, and program management.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Define and document customer requirements, generate mechanical concepts and support the development process (build, test, learn & iterate) through production, deployment, and field support.
+ Work with multi-disciplinary teams involving mechanical and electrical engineers, designers, analysts, materials scientists, fabrication specialists, and test personnel.
+ Support a large and very diverse body of legacy hardware and the associated activities and users.


+ Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant STEM field, or equivalent:

- Higher degree (MS, PhD) in relevant field; or engineering or scientific experience and/or accomplishments that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to design and develop ancillary equipment hardware.
+ Relevant intern or work experience in Mechanical design (Creo, Solidworks, etc.), fabrication, and / or testing of piece parts and assemblies.
+ Ability to hold a DOE Q security clearance.
+ Ability to travel.


+ Mechanical component or prototype fabrication design experience.
+ Creation (Creo, Solidworks, etc.), interpretation, and review of production models and drawings including tolerancing.
+ Familiarity with computational analysis and simulation tools using standard commercial programs.
+ Experience working in or with the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) and/or the Department of Defense.
+ Demonstrated ability to team across fields.

Department Description:

Sandia/Californias Handling Gear Engineering Department develops and supports advanced electronic and mechanical subsystems to support the Nuclear Weapons Program. Our group is responsible for handling gear, test gear, and weapon container development; certification; and stockpile support for all weapons in the nuclear stockpile. These responsibilities include ensuring that every weapon and weapon subsystem is managed, lifted, and transported in a safe and secure manner according to recognized standards.

With over 15 active projects supporting every major LEP and Alt, combined with more than 220 fielded pieces of H-Gear supporting the active stockpile, the H-Gear program provides a continuously challenging, rewarding and dynamic work environment.

The various Components & Systems Engineering Departments are part of the Sandia/California Weapon Engineering Centers which are responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U.S. nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. The departments are comprised of groups of dedicated and motivated engineers with technical degrees, primarily in mechanical and electrical engineering.
